Hi Mike,
You can insert new route segment or waypoint by selecting waypoint, this will insert new waypoint or selected tool after waypoint you have selected, using tool "Modifier: Insert new route segment before current one" you can insert waypoint or add new route segment before selected waypoint, mostly that needs to be used if you want something to add in beginning of route.

Numbering of waypoints can be inverted, there is option under route gear button "Invert segments order"
