About Me:

Started out in aeronautical engineering and aircraft maintenance engineering on the big jets. For last 12 years ive flown dozens of aircraft from microlights to fast corporate jets. I also hold flight instructor ratings for single and multi-engine aircraft and teach instrument ratings. These days I mostly fly helicopter tours and medevac flights. I hold 2 airline transport pilot licences and a commercial helicopter licence.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

Aerial photos, surveilance etc. Working on my designs and trying new things. I love the apm 2.5 still working through all the functions. Need to learn how to program!

"I have the same problem where I live. Any idiot can buy a model aircraft these days and fly it wherever they want to. Gone are thr days of actually learning how to fly! Perhaps out of the box Uav should have regulations included in the box. They are…"

Ben Gearing replied to Brian S's discussion My X8, still no success. in X8
"Hi brian,
Most swept wings have the cg around the 1/2 cord ( at the root of the wing) or a little bit forward of that.  The holes in the picture look to be about right. Might be worth trying a more aft cg for more control though. Try small…"

"Where is the CG in relation to the nose? I dont have an x8 (but want one) but with all that weight up front it looks to be very nose heavy. I cant see the motor and light weight electronics off setting the li-po's.
Does it fly well in manual mode?"

Ben Gearing commented on Graham Dyer's blog post Another 100km+ flight
"Further to my point.. all simple autopilots used on aircraft have absolutely no control over power or throttle therefore if you command an increase in altitude you must add power manually so the aircraft is able to maintain AIRSPEED otherwise the…"

Ben Gearing commented on Graham Dyer's blog post Another 100km+ flight
"I think the problem lies in the programming assumption that throttle controls altitude. An age old argument.
The apm needs to use pitch as the primary altitude control and throttle (power) for airspeed control. This is obviously not the case if…"

"Great flight.
Just a note on the problem you mentioned regarding the phugoid motion...
It look like you are flying a constant radius with reference to the ground? The problem there is the need to speed up and slow down. The downwind leg could…"

"Arrr. Ok Its hinged at the top. It looks good as it is on the top. You could put a strip of acetate running span-wise along the bottom to cover the gap. Acetate is the clear stuff you use on overhead projectors. (showing my age a little!) Its cheap…"

Ben Gearing commented on moglos's blog post Anatomy of a 100km attempt
"Hi,
If you google wing fairings (images) you will see lots of examples of different fairings for different components. Designers go to great lengths in order to reduce drag and increase speed. Some older aircraft have kits you can add to reduce the…"

"Nice project!
Try reducing interferance drag between the fuselage and wing by using fairings.  Very little weight gain if you use foam. Aileron, flap, elevator and rudder seals will also reduce drag. It seems like it has a fairly short span vs Cord…"
