Ex Military, so have had a long term interest in UAVs and have been convinced of the potential of using cheap and cheerful UAVs whereas the military are currently focussed on big and expensive ones.

Bill Jowitt replied to David Brewster's discussion DJI equipment violently flips in ArduCopter User Group
"Quick thought - have you checked the motor numbering? DJI and ArduCopter have different numbering schemes. DJI from front right anti-clockwise in X format is 1,2,3,4 but ArduCopter is 1,3,2,4"

"Auto-Level not working in 2.4/2.4.1
Could somebody else please try this before I report it as an issue? I have done this several times now, on my QuadPod indoors a few times and just now on my 3DR outside when the wind dropped enough, disarmed it…"

"Some more observations on flying 2.4.1 and Loiter...
Stab P, Nav P and Loiter P all affect Loiter and appear to be related e.g. if you increase Stab P to get stability and smoothness in windy conditions, you need to increase Nav P as well. The…"

"Quick observations on flying 2.4.1 and trying to get it to Loiter, in reasonable and variable winds.
Despite others observations, in windy conditions it appears that Nav P is needed, at the moment I am back to the default of 3, otherwise the copter…"

"Bug in Loiter in 2.3
Have reported it as an issue, but has anybody else seen this behaviour?
I have been posting about how inconsistent Loiter is, and sensitive to wind changes etc. but I think that a lot of my comments were caused by this bug. On…"

"Has anybody managed to get Loiter to work in differing wind conditions?
I have posted before about the sensitivity of 2.3 between no wind and low wind conditions i.e. that it appears that the loiter tuning is quite different between the 2 states.…"

Bill Jowitt posted a discussion
I am trying to use a zoom video camera - does anybody else have experience of doing so? Specifically, I have a problem with tuning the yaw. When in full zoom, I need a very precise and stable yaw. The problem I have is that if I simply dial up the…

"Help wanted - absolute altitude maintenance, and a stable yaw.
I would be very grateful if anybody could point me in the right direction in terms of parameters, or code to comment/uncomment so that I can disable the manual altitude adjustment in alt…"

"Loiter behaviour - no/very low wind.
Has anybody else observed this behaviour? When there is no wind, the Nav_P parameter needs to be quite low e.g. 1 to 1.2, otherwise you get pudding bowling. In very light winds, Nav_P can be more like 2 and then…"

Bill Jowitt replied to Bill Jowitt's discussion Setting up and testing Failsafe
"I finally had a go at this today. Hovering about 2 foot above a grassy snowy field, I switched my Tx off. The motors did not cut, as seems to happen to others, but they did reduce, so it just plonked down. When I switched my Tx back on, it slowly…"

"My tu'ppenth on Loiter with 2.3...
After yesterday in no/very low winds, I had ended up with a bit of Loiter P in at 0.9 and Loiter I at 0.001. After reading Dave C's comments on Rate_xxx_D, I arbitrarily reduced that overnight to 0.005. Seemed to…"

"Weird Alt Hold/Loiter behaviour. Have kept Throttle Rate P and Alt Hold P as per Tomas's parameters, but this afternoon I found that Alt Hold and Loiter became incredibly sensitive to throttle/climbing/descending. I have always been pretty careful…"

Bill Jowitt replied to Chris Anderson's discussion ArduCopter 2.3 released
"Only done 2 flights on 2.3 but am really impressed. No wind, but loiters have been pretty tight. Alt Hold looked fine and smooth, and it did drift so the loiters were not coincidence. RTL/Autoland worked absolutely fine. Even did a simple Auto…"

Bill Jowitt commented on Ellison Chan's blog post Swarm of Quads!
"That is one of the freakiest things I have ever seen...
Randy, re small quads, check out the QuadPod from Snelflight www.snelflight.co.uk - £200, 23cm. I have briefly fitted my APM2 board to it and it does fly, not had enough time to tune it yet."

Bill Jowitt replied to Jason Short's discussion Arducopter 2.2 beta
"WARNING! Be very careful when testing 2.2b6 with an APM2 board.
Not quite sure what just happened. I spent yesterday flying 2.2b6 on my 3DR with my APM1 board, with mixed results. Some very good loiters, but hard to replicate when tuning individual…"

"HEY DEV/TEST TEAM! GIVE US A HELPING HAND!
Now I know that putting stuff in capitals is often seen as rude, but I am really bemused by what is going on in this forum. According to Chris Anderson, there are some 10,000 APM1 boards in circulation, but…"
