Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Is it possible to install larger motors and ESC's on a low-power quad?
"My project doesn't involve photography, so I'm not worried about that part.
I'm attempting to build a plane launcher using a quad. Many fliers have difficulty launching planes, especially EDF's. People build all kinds of launchers, and the most…"

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Is it possible to install larger motors and ESC's on a low-power quad?
"Your setup looks great, Todd! Where did you buy the CF tubes? I got mine from HK and they look just like yours.
I can buy a Phantom2 for about $350, do you think that's hackable?
You said "... a lot of configuring" and I'm not very good in that…"

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Is it possible to install larger motors and ESC's on a low-power quad?
"I'm assuming that the signals from the receiver don't care what the size of the ESC and motor are, is that reasonable?
Then, theoretically, I could put ESC's and motors that take 60-80A each, and batteries to suit, of course. The big question is are…"

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Is it possible to install larger motors and ESC's on a low-power quad?
"Definitely not the lowest cost solution, but I'm looking for something ready made since I'm not having any luck with my setup. Andre K. said:
While I actually don't *know* I strongly doubt that due to the proprietrary nature of those products. On…"

"Thanks, Andre. Would a DJI Phantom2 work?"

Is it possible to install larger motors and ESC's on a low-power quad?I'd like to buy a lower-cost, intelligent quad and increase its lifting power by using larger motors and ESC's.Would that work?

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Can I test one motor at a time with Arducopter? in ArduCopter User Group
"Yes, Khoa, I got that far. I connected power only to one motor and I get an error message saying: "Command was denied by the autopilot".
I increased throttle but no difference.
Are we sure I don't have to have 4 motors connected?"

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Can I test one motor at a time with Arducopter? in ArduCopter User Group
"I don't need a pm since I'm powering the controller with an ESC..
I want to be able to test only one motor on one ESC at a time. Is that possible?
Khoa says yes, so I'll try his suggestion.
Thanks."

"The linked page still doesn't answer my question whether all motors should be connected or not."

Will do."

"Thanks for the link.
The wooden board setup is only a test rig to hold parts in place instead of having them scattered all over the place."

I put together a prototype Arducopter controller with APM 2.6. It's been programmed for quads. Please see pic. Can I test only one motor, or does the controller need to see all four motors connected? Thanks in advance.

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Adding a horizontal motor/prop to drive a quad in ArduCopter User Group
"I thought your point consisted of 8 motors, but maybe I'm misunderstanding you.
I'm thinking of using a quad to launch model planes of up to about 1kg. If it works, a lot of people would like something of that sort."

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Adding a horizontal motor/prop to drive a quad in ArduCopter User Group
"I'm thinking about launching planes up to about 1kg.
The quad would be a hacked CX-20 (or similar). I'd use only the control systems of the CX-20 and provide a much larger frame with a more powerful drive system."

Dan Jacob replied to Dan Jacob's discussion Adding a horizontal motor/prop to drive a quad in ArduCopter User Group
"Randy, about the RTL control, I have an amateur idea how to accomplish that.
The quad Tx would be mounted on a board and placed on the ground. On the board there'd be a Rx and servo, controlled by the pilot. When the plane is separated from the…"

"That sounds complicated, Clif. I saw a video of a quad with a horizontal thruster maintaining level pretty well.
