Very interesting question. You can use an arduino and program a copter switch.
and it repeat the signal to your main exploring/fpv copter so if it went behind an object the signal stays intact.

I used channel 1-5 for copter one, 6-10 for copter two and channel 11-15 for copter three. When I control copter three for example, then copter one and two get a neutral stick position. The rest is done by flight phases."

One Arducopter is funny, but three Copters (at the same time) are Fun^3.Everything controlled by one transmitter. Realized with some mixers and flight phases. I can control each one individually or all together.Perfect Loiter with Arducopter 3.1.5…
