About Me:

As an FAA Certified Commercial Pilot my approach to the design and operation of small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is focused on safety and reliability. Having owned and operated an FAA Certified Air Charter Operation, I have extensive training in the field of commercial aviation. I draw on my experience in commercial aviation to develop custom solutions for my clients. My academic training in the sciences serves as a foundation for my methodical approach to problem solving and procedural development. My experience as a technical writer can assist the emerging field of commercial UAS as skilled persons are needed to develop operational and safety procedures. The safe operation of a UAS involves more than just piloting skill, it is a decision-making process and this must be properly communicated to persons entering the field.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

Gus Calderon is the owner of Airspace Consulting and he helps companies develop their commercial drone operation. He has helped over 65 companies to date and he is currently developing operating manuals for large utility companies. Gus was a member of the design team for Lady Gaga's "Flying Dress", known as the Volantis. He was also selected as the pilot for the Volantis because of his experience as an FAA Certified Commercial Pilot and knowledge of multirotor aircraft. Lady Gaga was successfully flown in the Volantis on November 10th, 2012 during the special event for her "Art Pop" album release. Lady Gaga hopes to "inspire the youth of the world to use technology to improve their lives." This is a noble cause that I fully support.

"Hi Dave,

I am glad you enjoyed the article! Unfortunately, it is not possible to manually set the shutter speed on the GoPro Hero3. As far as pulling stills, we use Final Cut Pro X, but it is not free software. The price of that software has…"

"Jani, EDf multirotors will never fly "snappy" because that type of propulsion is more similar to a turbine engine which has to "spool-up" and increase RPM before it can generate thrust. If by "snappy" you mean control response, multirotors with…"

Jani, thanks for posting but you are incorrect about the stability of the Volantis. With a slightly lower payload she is incredibly stable and graceful in flight. With all due respect, you are also incorrect about multirotors with EDF…"
