Mark Langille replied to Drone Thugs N Harmony's discussion Canada SFOC Application - Northern Region
"If none of those apply then just leave them. There are no redundant controls or surveillance systems.
I would just say single control system with Return To Home failsafe.

Generally we have all the specifics outlines in a UAV Manual for a given…"

Mark Langille replied to Darius Jack's discussion eBee becomes Canada’s first compliant fixed-wing drone in ArduCopter User Group
"It is more the fact that the eBee filed the required documents and are now considered Complaint UAVs by TC. Many systems no doubt meet the design standards but few have filed officially.  Aeryon also recently received this as well.

My fear is that…"

Mark Langille replied to Darius Jack's discussion eBee becomes Canada’s first compliant fixed-wing drone in ArduCopter User Group
"Those are two different items.  Compliant status means the UAV met the design standards and thus are eligible for operators to submit under the Complaint SFOC process.

There are lots of operators with SFOCs in Canada like HighEye.

Info on the…"

Mark Langille commented on Rob_Lefebvre's blog post New Drone Service Tests Commercial Usage Laws in Canada
"SFOC is NOT tied to the PIC.  It is tied to the Operations Manager/Operator.  We have multiple pilots on our SFOC."

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"New regulations are heading towards requiring a level of licensing/training/certification, most likely a ground school and exam.
An early draft is attached.
As to when it will be law, no one knows.DRAFT UAV SI for Coordination - EN.doc"

It's referred to officially as "long-term authority".

We talked with our regional TC reps to determine how and when we were able to get it."

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"It is basically an SFOC with an extended date range and area of operation.  Ours covers all of Atlantic Canada until the end of the year."

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"To operate legally yes, SFOC needed for every flight, or an open blanket SFOC, which is what we have."

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"No, no limit.  Submit whatever you like.
If your flying at the same location you can request multiple dates in a single SFOC.  They typically will allow you a window of a week or two for factors such as weather, etc.
If it's for a different location…"

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"It is going to be a month for our last submission to be approved based on what TC told me yesterday.
Doubtful anyone is going to get one within a day, could merely be a mixup in dates, I've had one SFOC with even the wrong name on it, for another…"

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"There are no guidelines as to when or how you get a blanket SFOC.  it all comes down to the discretion of the person handling SFOCs for your region.
We received ours after a dozen or so SFOCs."

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"You can use way points but the pilot must be able to take control at any point, cannot be fully autonomous.  Also has to be line of sight at all times.  Or that is how I understand it."

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"I don't think TC is concerned with someone building and testing a model for someone.  The focus is on people out actively doing commercial operations with a UAV.

Even on the test flight issue I've heard different responses from different people at…"

Mark Langille replied to Calvin Reich's discussion When is a UAV reguired to have a SFOC in Canada? Blurred Lines between persoanl use and Commercial use
"The application process is really an exercise in defining your processes and procedures. TC want to see if you have the background and ability to safely operate.  It makes you detail and research all the factors involved.
From our first application…"
