About Me:

Matthew Silic received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida in 2012. In 2021, Matthew received the PhD in mechanical engineering. His research focused on unmanned aerial vehicles, a focus he hopes to carry on in his career. Outside of academics, Matthew’s pastimes include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Salsa, CrossFit, and plant based cooking.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

My particular interests include embedded systems, sensor calibration, aircraft dynamics, autopilot design, parameter estimation, Bayesian estimation, wireless propagation, and the scientific method.

IntroductionIt can be difficult to get useful data from a magnetometer. It can be especially difficult if the data is used to estimate the yaw attitude of the vehicle. For example, the sensor may indicate the proper direction for certain attitudes,…

Matthew Silic commented on Matthew Silic's blog post Simple Waypoint Navigation for Fixed-Wing UAVs
"Thanks Chris!

There were two reasons we wanted our own autopilot. First, we wanted an all-in-one board that had a GPS receiver, barometer, 9-axis IMU, temperature/humidity sensor, and a telemetry radio. It was important to have a single, compact…"

There is a simple way to implement waypoint navigation. The algorithm was introduced by Lawrence, Frew, and Pisano back in 2008. You can view the paper here: http://dx.doi.org/10.2514/1.34896.I have flight tested this algorithm multiple times on a…

"Hey Curt,
The YouTube video you posted looks amazing! I like how the flight trajectory stays up on the HUD. So you use temperature-dependent calibration coefficients? I've never tried to capture the temperature-dependence. I've always assumed the…"
