Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"Why does QuadShot have bad descent characteristics in hover mode?"

"Okay, nice to know! Thanks ;-)Wingcopter is very cool indeed! I like their video where the plane takes off in the forest and flies to an open field. Very maneuverable. I'd like to know how well it handles wind..."

Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"We were indeed familiar with QuadShot and Atmos. However, QuadShot has ailerons, VertiKUL has not. Atmos has two tilting props, VertiKUL has not. Absence of servos and tilting mechanisms was for us a basic design feature to have higher robustness…"

Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"Okay, your talking about final descent in hover mode, sorry.
Well although at first I thought this is better, I'm not so sure. Because this is not a stable situation... if the wind turns the wing a bit (quadcopter yaw) it will turn in completely,…"

"The image processing, or automated landing altogether wasn't my part, but I'll ask my collegue about it..I didn't know about the 'red balloon finder' yet, very cool! Thanks for the ideas about dealing with wind! However if you point the wingtip into…"

Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"And yes, a big downside of this concept is that it doesn't like wind. Especially for hovering and transitioning, because the wing is then perpendicular to the air stream. Indeed, maybe by aligning the wing with the airstream during landing it…"

Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"Landing was actually a separate thesis. Unfortunately there was no time to integrate it on VertiKUL. Precision landing on the platform you see was achieved with a 450 Flamewheel and indoors. Accuracy was about 5cm, if I remember correctly, based on…"

Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"Good remark, but the reason is simple: a real tailsitter does not allow such a easy parcel insertion as this one (see video). Also a tailsitter normally still has control surfaces. One of our goals was to have a transitioning VTOL that has no…"

"@Daniel: this was a thesis project for Cyriel, Maarten and me. There is still a lot of work and next year new students will continue working on it together with Bart. However commercialization is not at hand, yet ;-)"

Menno Hochstenbach commented on Bart Theys's blog post Design of a multi-rotor VTOL UAV and docking station for automated aerial transport
"@ Rob: do you mean how stable is it? We've flown only up to angles of attack of 40degrees, so under the still under the stall speed. The reason for this is because its cruise speed is about 70km/h, so to fast to keep track of in our small testing…"

Menno Hochstenbach replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter-3.1 released!
"That's because the drop is not due to aerodynamic forces pushing the quad's body. But due to a 'disfigured' barometer reading. Since you don't use your barometer in stabilize mode (attitude is not controlled in stabilize mode) it will not be a…"

"I don't have experience with Loiter and it's associated gains, sorry.
Trim Throttle will be changed by the controller during the code, that's why it has changed. Leave it at 590 ;-).
You can set thr_mid to 590 as well to ensure a smooth transition…"

Menno Hochstenbach replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter-3.1 released!
"That 'sweet spot' you've mentioned... did you find a stick position that corresponded to holding altitude? If so, how much deflection was it from centered position?

Btw do not change the gains, they cannot solve the problem because the problem is…"

"You never commanded a constant altitude... did you leave your stick in the middle? Try calibrating the radio again
