About Me:

I'm the world's oldest noob; in that I've been stuck at the "noob pilot" skill level for nearly 40 years. I am "joystick defective"; no matter how much sim time or real flying time I get, I just seem to have trouble with the hand-eye coordination thing. I do, however, have a LOT of skill at building as a result. ;)

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I do a little mini ans micro FPV; my first excursion into APM is a HK 2.5.2 board which I wish to configure for Attitude hold and RTH on my latest 72" Cub build.

"This is utterly bunk science. You are STILL thinking ONLY in the frame of reference of linear acceleration, and I've already explained why that's a specious argument at best where multirotor aircraft are concerned.I've explained why modern quads need…"

"I've been flying the DYS BL20As on a number of miniquads; they hold up well and perform well under pretty heavy loading with 6045 props on 1806-2300 & 2204-2300 motors and 3S. I get awesome runtimes; 30 min from a 30C 3S-4000 on my G10 Flying Brick…"

"LOL... this is great info... if you're flying a plane.Absolutely irrelevant to the response time of a fast ESC to an acro-mode FC.Your test rig is based on PWM; that in itself slows down the entire chain to the point that a 100hz sample rate is…"

"Yeah... well... a lot of us have settled on the ZMR250. It's cheap as beans, supports 6" props and 22xx motors stock, and is essentially  disposable at ~$20 if we buy the China direct versions. They're made of 'glas with a CF skin and are actually…"

"I raced BMX then MX, then Can-Am, I've bracket raced street stock IRL, raced Sportsman class irl, and raced 1/10 scale AA class and dirt Oval WoO. I know more than a little about adrenaline junkie-ing dumping massive current in a few seconds. ;)THIS…"

"Race ESCs use 16ga for 40A, 16-18ga for 30A, and 18-20 ga for 20A versions. Wire gauge depends directly on run length; typically these ESCs will have BATT leads less than 100mm long. If you need longer than they come with, always step up to the next…"

"Sure... in a DRAG race. Not in anything else, that any actual RACERS care about. And we have 40A ESCs that will eat these ALIVE because they start with short buses, 4oz copper pour, 16 ga power leads and they STILL have 4KHz refresh AND Active…"

"Sure... it's a GREAT ESC for AP tuna boats. It's just NOT a RACE ESC. It's not equipped with the basic features necessary to be a RACE ESC.Get BLHeli with MultiShot or at least OneShot125 on it. Get some Active Braking on it. Put it on a diet; get…"

"I LOVE the SN20A; it is the same ESC as the BL20A, only with outdated SK firmware. We buy them when they go on sale and flash BLHeli on them to turn them into serviceable entry-level acro ESCs. :DCheers,Paul"

"Forrest-
Since you still didn't answer my questions, I looked up your pet ESC on the DYS site.http://www.dys.hk/ProductShow.asp?ID=51As I suspected, it does not support either 1-Shot125 OR active braking of any sort. These are MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS…"

Paul Krajewski replied to Forrest Frantz's discussion Worlds Best ESC - Making it Better
"Forrest -
One simple question:What is the max E-RPM on your ESCs?

What we call "performance" is power to weight in the range of 8:1-10:1. An average build is pulling around 1KG per motor on 5" props and in excess of 1KG thrust per motor on 6" props…"

"Forrest, with all due respect... you have no idea what you're talking about, at least where racing is concerned. Those DYS aren't even in the top 50 for a racing ESC; they're ancient tech with crap FETs that switch too slow and have way too high…"

The ONLY way we're going to be able to make it happen ourselves is to make ourselves; expecting any help from the FAA or the FCC is going to kill this hobby in the cradle. We need to come up with a system that we, the UAV pilots, consider to…"
