About Me:

Im a mechanical engineering student in final year, I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I study at the Auckland University of Technology.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

Im using the Ardupilot Mega hardware for my final year engineering project. My airframe is a radian electric glider. Im hoping to develop a system that enables the glider to autonomously find thermals and stay in the air by soaring.

Hi, After each flight i try to download the log file from my APM unit. Sometime it generates a log file, but most of the time it reports that there are no logs to download. Im taking off and landing manually & flying around waypoints autonomously.…

Ryan Johnston replied to Ryan Johnston's discussion how to connect logic to hardware with the APM board
"Woohoo, iv finally got outputs & LEDs going.

I understand the schematic now. I assumed that the outputs were coming straight out of the ATMega1280 unit, I was getting very confused.

Iv never been so happy to see flashing lights in my life! I…"

Ryan Johnston replied to Ryan Johnston's discussion how to connect logic to hardware with the APM board
"Hi Chris, thanks for that information. I was looking for something like that schematic. I had a look at the spreadsheet too. I still cant quite work out how the arduino pin numbers relate to what i can see on the board though.

The APM unit has…"

I recently purchased the APM 1280 + IMU shield to fly my electric glider. I ultimately want to reprogram it to be able to find thermals autonomously. However im starting to think iv thrown myself in the deep end. I need to get a solid understanding…

Ryan Johnston replied to Ryan Johnston's discussion Cant upload APM firmware: "Cant detect APM version"
"Woohoo, got it working.

After trying four cables, iv decided there is a dodgy connection in the miniB USB port on the APM board. All of the solders are ok. Theres a loose connection in between the port and the board i think. Its very sensitive to…"

Ryan Johnston replied to Ryan Johnston's discussion Cant upload APM firmware: "Cant detect APM version"
"Thanks for the feedback.

The com port and baud rate settings are correct. I have APM selected, not arducopter. Iv tried it on two computers now, so its not a com port conflict.

Bad solder is a possibility i guess. Ill give it a thorough check…"

Ryan Johnston replied to GliderUAV's discussion A.T.V. Autonomous Thermalling Vehicle
"Hi there! Im a mechanical engineering student, and im doing a project very similar to this. Neat to see that there other people who think this is worth perusing. I live in New Zealand.

Im in the very early stages of my project. Iv just received my…"
