globalhawk-main%282%29.jpgWhile SkyWalker is out-of stock in almost everywhere, new big size foam models are popping out in many places out there. I just can't stop looking at this one... looks so nice!

The question here is, are those beautiful models really useful for FPV or being our Drones? I would be afraid of breaking such a beautiful thing... and the 2360mm wing doesn't looks that strong.

Those fins underneath the V tail... it looks pretty weak to touch the ground a second time.

Space would not be a problem, for sure.

As Chris mentioned, scale models or the Predator / Global Hawk type or UAV airframes typically does not fly well. The problem is that the original design is for a 166 ft wingspan high altitude (relatively high speed) drone. There is no way you can just scale that down to 7 ft and expect to get a well behaved UAV with predictable stall and low speed performance. Just like there are R/C design that fly great, but would never work well in full scale. Look at the swept wings of the ScanEagle for pointers on how to make it more stable at R/C sizes.

  • I'm going to install my ardupilot 1 in a quadcopter, but was thinking of putting it (or another one) eventually into a plane.  Been looking at the Bixler on the recommendations here but they seem to be out of stock in the US continually.  I then saw the RQ-1 drones etc., and thought "cool" but from what Chris is saying these are not the greatest especially for a rookie pilot?  Should I hold out for a Bixler?

  • They do look attractive, but the consensus among hobbyists seems to be that large UAS such as the Global Hawk and Reaper don't scale down so nicely. I believe Anderson made a post once about his experience with a scale Predator, and the results were less than spectacular.

As it's been said before, this Global Hawk design uses an EDF (Electric Ducted Fan), which is not typically known for efficiency. I suppose we'll have to wait until people have to start building them for FPV to see how they really perform, but those with experience say this is not a viable FPV platform. But if you find it fun, hey, you could give it a shot.

  • (very) small detail but although the colors are similar to the two Dryden Block 10 Global Hawks the shape of the nose is from a Block 20 (and on) that are used only by USAF

  • flight video looks smooth.  Little modifying and it would be great to pair with this. Been wanting to try one of these little units out.

  • Those wings also look to be very brittle.  Won't take much of a hard landing to break one.

I do like the fact that this one is modelled with the NASA theme rather than military.

I use these scale UAV-style planes (like the Predator, Reaper, Raven and Global Hawk) for static display at trade shows, but never fly them. They're typically poor fliers and the high-aspect wing ones (like the Global Hawk and Predator/Reaper) tend to have terrible tip-stalling problems.  They make for every expensive crashes.

@Grips: Here on BevRC, but is the new one with bigger wings.

Does anyone know where to pickup a good quality Skywalker right now? I have looked all over.
