An interesting use of drones - servers to the sky

The context is not so legal. But an interesting idea, even if they seem to have little idea of how to implement or how to manage power :-).

some extracts:

"Low Orbit Server Stations"

"With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometres up in the air."

The pirate bay is well know for grandiose schemes.  I believe at one point they were also talking about buying an old satellite, and/or relocating to or buying Sealand.  The only thing they have ever successfully done is move servers to other countries with less restrictive copy write laws.

They probably got this idea from the "Pirate Box", and I expect these to actually become very common over the next decade or so.  I would be child's play for one of us to lift one of these devices with a drone.  The only question would be would it have any value other than range to a legitimate user ?

Sad, but maybe in the future that will become the only way to keep our liberty, to find idea like that.

What kind of drones I wonder? Certainly not the multirotor depected in the article.

Surely something floating would be more feasible?

It would save countries lots of money.  They wouldn't have to pay for targeting drones to practice with, instead they could just send their ships out and hunt Pirates Bay Server Drones.

Here's a way to deal with the power issue - tether it to a boat that has a generator. Similar to this concept:

How is that in any way different from having a router on your property?

Height = range

Antennas on barges?
