Actually their hardware is not fully compatible as they use few wrong components on their assembly. I've seen several of these.
Buying from us 3DR/jDrones and others you will contribute back to development effort that we are doing. Sure you can buy parts from somewhere else but don't expect them to be identical for what we are doing.
Speaking of chinese manufacturing, most of fabrication houses in china are using Japanese pick&place machines and they lay from 20.000 - 60.000 points per hour. But that's another story :)

They do claim to be public spirited entrepreneurs but I do sense teeth with blood on them.
Iv'e worked for a lot of small companies funded by this sort of thing before, what always seems to happen is that eventually they own the Company, they control the Company and the people who started it all are either gone or salaried employees.
There are the people with brains and then there are the people who buy the people with the brains.
I donate what I do here as well, but there really is great benefit of having a commercial enterprise primarily aimed at bot servicing and assisting this effort and that is largely what 3DRobotics is. And they have done a really good job for all of us. In a perfect world we could possibly get by without paid commercial interests.
But the world isn't perfect and what we have is working remarkably well.
That said, it is open source and I buy Chinese stuff too, lots of it.
But don't knock 3DR for being a business and occasionally if it doesn't make much difference choose to buy from them because they actually do help glue this community together and without them it truly would be a devastating loss.
They aren't saying don't buy Chinese, they don't even really comment on it, so your choice as a member of the DIY community I am just telling you how I feel about it.
In any case, the best way to develop and use the project can only those who are its author, dull copy running short and it is not effective, since it always remains, and can not plan for the future. So, the "project" means are the people who worked with him.
They are what you have to buy and what to invest money. And if they do not, it is necessary to create and grow.
IMHO very bad when the all methods of "competition for profit" transferred into the realm of free development.
Unfortunately, many of open development gropu suffer from a split forms of activity and try to combine business and creativity in not a suitable means. The result is bad business and bad creative process.
The most appropriate form for the open development societies is still a kind of academic environment, but less formal, and more freedom from officialdom.
However, depending on the circumstances, can be successful any mixed forms of organization activities =)
Just a few thoughts about Open Hardware and Open Software.
The base purpose of the these communities is not making a profit, but satisfaction the needs of its members in creative scientific and technological activities and of course mutual learning.
The resulting products of this activity are not the property of individuals or groups in any of the conventional legal forms. But respect for individual and collective copyrights is an important ethical component, vital to the successful continuation and development of the these communities.
Just as in science, it is important to take care of the moral and ethical side of things.
For example, the creation of a large number of stub-like projects without real autors source reduces the motivation of other active developers and harms the development of technology in general.
Business in all its forms is just a consumer of open development products and should be interested in creating the most favorable environment for the existence and development any kind of OpenHW and OpenSW communities. =)
