Excerpt below from How Uber’s Autonomous Cars Will Destroy 10 Million Jobs And Reshape The Economy by 2025
"I have spent quite a bit of time lately thinking about autonomous cars, and I wanted to summarize my current thoughts and predictions. Most people – experts included – seem to think that the transition to driverless vehicles will come slowly over the coming few decades, and that large hurdles exist for widespread adoption. I believe that this is significant underestimation. Autonomous cars will be commonplace by 2025 and have a near monopoly by 2030, and the sweeping change they bring will eclipse every other innovation our society has experienced."

"It came as no surprise when CEO Travis Kalanick recently stated that Uber will eventually replace all of its drivers with self-driving cars."
Travis Kalanick goes public to prove that he's an idiot? Let's see, he's built his company almost entirely on the independent work of his drivers. And now he proudly announces his plans to put them all out of work? Thank you very much. Welcome to leadership in the 21st century.
Janis I would rather risk a sensor failure with the drunk as a skunk in the backseat verses the drunk as a skunk at the wheel we have today.
Not gonna happen on common roads that soon. Due to legal issues. If you are drunk as skunk on backseat, autopilot takes you home and incident killing pedestrian occurs despite all hi-tech safety systems. Who is going to jail? You - then it makes no sense from autopilot if you cannot be drunk as skunk on backseat. Developers of software or hardware components? Manufacturer? Navigation data provider?
Human race is not yet ready to accept that shit just happen and nobody is to blame if all necessary precautions where taken to minimize risk.
The lawyers will set this back decades. When a self-driving car gets in an accident, who do they sue? The manufacturer? Google? Apple? The owner? The state? The DOT for allowing it? The company that made a sensor? All of the above?
It was a good article in that it highlighted the positives as well as the negatives, from the title I thought it was going to be all negative.
The article talks about how GM, Ford etc will become obsolete, but they realise the gamechanger that is an automated car, so they're all working on it too.
The article referenced Price Waterhouse Coopers research, but not Googles which is a lot more accurate. They estimate that autonomous cars will replace 90% of cars, as tradespeople, farmers who live remotely etc have specific uses for their vehicles, so electric autonomous cars won't suit.
It will be an interesting time to be alive. The huge leap forward in efficiency will dramatically increase the worlds standard of living.
I also think autonomous cars will have a significant influence, but not as quick as you think perhaps.
It isn't technological barriers that retard these things it's common greed and self interest.
And the people in charge listen to the people who are already there when it comes to making rules, because it benefits them to do so.
I know this isn't news, but when it comes to autonomous cars immediately displacing non-autonomous ones, the manufacturers are going to scream bloody murder because their plants are all dedicated to building the old fashioned ones and every tiny "mishap" will get blown into a deal breaker.
(hmm sounds just like us and the FAA).
Same thing I think, only even more billions of dollars at stake.
I welcome this road will be way more safe. In my line of work I see people in school
zone not following speed limit and texting at the same time. they would run over you kid
without stopping. and it happen last week cop are looking for the person. sad...
"Marty, where we're going, we don't need roads"
