DJI officially released 2.4G Bluetooth Datalink & iPAD Ground Station. Nice simple interface, seems very intuitive. Can't wait to see Droid Planner 2.0 :)
Hi, I have been lurking for a while but I thought I'd mention that we (Fighting Walrus LLC) are still actively working on a 915Mhz and 433Mhz telemetry radio accessory for iOS and a range extender kit for AR Drone as well - www.fightingwalrus.com (we are in the Apple MFi program) We also continue to work on an open source ground control station for iOS that got its start here on DIYDrones. https://github.com/fightingwalrus/iGCS
The radio accessory is taking longer than we wanted but we are still kicking and making good progress. We are on what I hope is our final iteration of mechanical, have a PCB layout about ready to go and hope to get Apple what they need for final approval soon so that we can move to production sometime in Q1 2014. Fingers crossed!
On the bluetooth solution - I have been using a "custom" (read hacked together) bluetooth bridge to a 3drobotics radio for some debugging with iPad and the bluetooth is not very stable unfortunately. Of course I'm also probably a bit biased against the bluetooth bridge solution :-)
And about a port of DroidPlanner to iOS: I don't think it will happen, just if some developer did the work (But then it probably would be easier to write it from scratch)
There have been a couple of beta projects of apple GCS, just search DiyDrones.
The big problem with android devices is that people like to compare a $50 android device to a $400 apple. I can't complain about the apples, but as a developer they are useless for me.

No article - I know a developer... ;o)
Nigel:
Article !
Not sure - I know Apple are working closely with DJI - So there's obviously no 'blanket ban'
Nigel:
The difference i believe in those exceptional cases is the parrot and others that you are implying use wifi. Somehow thats different enough.
As are most of the Android tablets I've used - My Note 11 is unusable in sunlight without a matt screen protector.
