Flone, the flying phone

We are developing Flone: a interface that allows smartphones to fly.

Right now we are starting with the project, so first we design the airframe, it's a H quadcopter with space for electronics and free field of view for the camera of smartphone.

We would like to keep the design "mini" and easy to build.

At the moment we are using a Multiwii as flight board and a standard camera app in the smartphone.

Our plans is to develop an app than allows to fly with the onboard sensors and telemetry of the smartphone.

We plan to release the hardware with Creative Commons ShareAlike and the source code with GPL, so we would like to have the feedback of the diydrones community.

We published the airframe in Thingiverse, so you can already cut-it with a laser cutter, and we made a Instructables with all the instructions to build one yourself ;)

You can get updated about the project in our webpage: http://flone.cc ( In spanish )

One more thing... we would like to take advantage of this post to remember you that the last day to vote in Drones contest is coming, so if you like our project please vote us in Instructables ;)

  • Dear gold Flone developers,

I am contacting you because of specific open source development thread. In Vijay Kumar TEDxPenn Talk (Sikang Liu, Giuseppe Loianno, Yash Mulgaonkar, Gareth Cross) is highlighted Flone, drone with simple robotic hand and drones with software enhancement for precision farming (fruit recognition).

My interested is in open source intersection - flone fruit (apple) harvester. Any workgroup relating to such flone enhancement?
Thank you for your ideas, connections and actions - pointed attention.

    With best regards,

Leben der Porsche. Living the Porsche. Endless discussions about how to treat fruits are over. Flying phone (Sony Gold Xperia) and instead of fisches we put fruits in the boxes with it too... Connecting with right brains puts our supply chain into action... Oh... SILICON HILL Marketing goes so well with overblacked 911.

  • Hi Jim, I think that Android phones are fast as well, first we need to see the performance of Ubuntu phones.

We are flying under wifi, with a 20% JPEG quality with no delay. It's not a high quiality image, but we can see the landscape for fpv.

  • Dude, this is an incredible idea. My kids love the idea. You are on to something here.

  • This is great. Love to see an old phone put to good use. I would really love to see full FC/AP functions reside on the phone as well. I think with Ubuntu Phone coming up to speed this can be accomplished with some hardware and software hackery that are unfortunately beyond my skill level. As it is now should work pretty well for on board video and telemetry. Possible to use for short range FPV over wifi, not sure what kind of delays you would get over cellular, might be usable over LTE. Keep up the good work!

  • are you using the internal sensors on the phone for stabilization? or another board ?? surely there must be something that can be plugged into the phone jack to make use of all gyro, accelerometers gps and even 3g or 4g , there is no real reason to need anything more than 4 motors and esc and possibly a battery (even that might not be needed) if there is enough power to run the moors form the phone battery

  • Yes HeliStorm, we are making tests with the Osino periscope lens:

But we are designing for nexts releases a 3d printed pan-tilt mirror mount with two micro servos.

  • Just a quick question. The phone camera will point down, or up, depending on which camera is used. Could a periscope type device be added to provide a forward looking view?
  • Gives a new meaning to 'air time'.

  • Thanks!
    The maiden flight is here:

I can not embebed-it in the original post.

  • That is adorable.
