better signal because they're higher or lack of stuff blocking signals? (buildings, cars, etc)

I rather suspect that with superior line-of-sight, Airplanes get better than average signal 3g or otherwise, I further suspect that the rural areas of Australia are as likely as say Egypt to get cell phone coverage in the near future, and I'd take that bet most days.

It's interesting in that the phone network in australia is only in urban areas, and sketchy at best in country areas. Add to this, no UAV is allowed to fly over urban or populated areas in Australia currently. Added to this, that all phone towers are pointing their signal dowards ie below 400ft towards the earth. It's a fruitful exercise of wasting taxpayers money imo. Flying a UAV on 3g is a good thing, but who can use 3g in the outback of australia where 3g doesn't exist....
