Getting ready for Arducopter 3.0

I flew AC 3.0 (rc5) at Sparkfun which required me to rethink my vibration dampening strategy. In other words I had to go from no strategy to something very robust. If you want to fly 3.0 in any AP mode you'll need to consider at least some of these methods. Once upgraded, my copter was able to hold a 1 foot loiter box with the crappiest RCTimer props/motors they sell without issue.

Here was my shopping list:

I attached the latex foam to the vibration mount with super glue which worked nicely. Adding the dollar coins with super glue under the floating vibration mount also worked well.

Even with motors vibrating so much that they looked burry, it still held a great loiter.

  • I admit I have never though about frequency change, maybe I should put luck on my side, I'm doomed since I'm flying RC :D
While hoovering during my last flight It worked great but suddently one motor stopped without any warning leaving the tricopter plumet to the ground, just hoovering no manoeuver. Not a big deal, I just need to print annother frame but since this incident I consider the possibility to switch to hexa for redundancy.

I did slightly less on my hexa, but I'm mostly afraid what will happen in high winds. When the motors fight and the blades start flapping, new frequencies of vibrations can appear out of no where. I don't want to take any changes as I will be using these soon for long haul flights.

  • I did nothing to damper vibration, I didn't even try to balance prop but it is super stable anyway and altitude hold work perfectly.

I can't imagine what will happen if I put this stuff on my tri ;)
  • Great information here! Thanks for sharing guys!

AC3.0 uses accelerometers to maintain absolute position. High frequency vibes will interfere.

Once you get the vibes taken care of. 3.0 will surprise you with the performance. I'm sure Randy will do a post about it soon.

  • So why does AC 3.0 suddenly need so much dampening? Is there more information on it?

  • The most important preparation for a new Arduproduct is rebranding the whole thing as Hobbyking & selling it at 1/2 the price with some chinese spelling.  Would be interesting to measure its accuracy at 3pm in the city, between some highrise office buildings.

  • Any chance the 3DR store will begin to sell things like Moon Gel or the Great Planes Rx foam?  It seems to be a great opportunity to tie in some sales.

I also go overboard Jason!  :)

Moon Gel works wonders, rubber spacers also get some vibration out making the electronic tower better insulated from the rest. 2 X Double side tape was my pre 2.9 ideal choice, still works great in conjunction with the other materials.  I think the key is diversity in absorption material (unless someone just perfectly dial-in the material we need for all frames/conditions) hehe

So yeah it works great! :)
