Transport Canada and the RCMP are investigating videos posted on YouTube showing an “unmanned air vehicle” flying near Vancouver International Airport and over Vancouver Harbour, the site of commercial float-plane operations.

Transport Canada spokesman Rod Nelson said Tuesday the federal department is “very concerned about the operations of this UAV and we have been working with the RMCP to determine the operator’s identity.”

  • That may be true, but 3DR is headed in the same direction with the Iris. Granted, there is a bit more preparation that goes into 3DR's product.

  • It isn't being made in china that causes ridicule.  It just happens to be the poster boy for ready-to-fly consumer targeted unpack-and-go UAV.

  • Here's a question that has been bugging me for a while. Why are DJI owners just about always ridiculed about their choice of craft? Many of the others I have researched are built in China or built of Chinese parts as well. And, the 3DRobotics Iris is manufactured in Mexico.
Does an operator need to design and build his/her UAV in order to be taken serious? If so, then someone should tell full scale pilots, auto racers, and astronauts that they have no right to be called professionals because they fly and drive a vehicle built by others
It would nice if we did have more UAVs built is the USA, but economics supposedly has something to do with it.

  • Ugh. I had just typed a response about this probably being someone that simply doesn't know any better with their new RTF phantom "toy" taking pictures of the cool big airplanes.  And about the punishment needing to fit the crime and the intent.  Maybe he shouldn't be hung out to dry for what was probably no mal intent and not knowing any better with something that isn't well known.

Then looked at his UAV and his other videos. Never mind. Fry him.

  • Another massive dick attempts to screw fellow hobbyists.

  • Some analysis puts the aircraft over the middle of the road bridge, 350m from the runway centreline (and therefore the aircraft), 2nm from the aerodrome reference point and hopefully puts the operator in jail.

  • Does anyone have a link to the original post on YouTube? I would like to submit "feedback" to this person.

  • We are fortunate that this individual posted the video to Youtube. I realize that the first instinct is to say that the video will give the hobby a black eye but, it also provides investigators with a method for tracking this person down and making an example out of them.  The sooner that people realize that this kind of flying is REALLY not ok, the better, both for us as hobbyists, and for the people in the air.

I am not familiar with Canadian law but I would hope that the pilot could be charged with some kind of felony endangerment resulting in a short stint in the clink.
