This awesome display of VTOL --> horizontal flight -> vertical landing is accomplished by the Booz Paparazzi-based quad project. Although many people have tried VTOL aircraft that are meant to transition to wing-based horizontal flight, it's very hard to accomplish the transition, especially the transition from horizontal flight back to vertical. This one does it very naturally. Impressive!

  • I have got to clarify this. Booz is the Quad version of Paparazzi, the only involvement I have with it, is making some hardware with AngusP for the community. We initially did this as we got tired of waiting for the main Paparazzi vendor to get hardware made and how elusive he was about time frame and price.

When he decided to charge $1060 for a Booz set (and that's without the cables required), we stepped in to sell them for a lot less as a service to people who wrote the software and our fellow enthusiasts.

The software is a Free software project released under the GPL, the main programmers are in Europe. I have never committed any code to the project and the devs deserve the credit for Booz, all myself and Angus did was board layout updates and got the made.

The video has been around for ages, it is very cool for sure and the project has changed a lot since then.

However a huge word of warning with the project. My opinion is that it is a developers only project right now, it is a long way from being ready for regular users. There are also some fairly bad problems with the architecture and I can see a re-write in the future for sure.
  • wow thats a great video. I love the design - it also makes a great sound during flight!
  • while the booz board is developed in Australia, I doubt that this video was shot in Australia ... wrong vegetation.

I have been following the Booz crowd with some interest, they seem to be having great fun, when I get back to Blighty I might just get me one of them there boards! itching to get some EPP wings cut ;-)
  • Very nice !
  • I've been wondering whether a 5th motor/propeller could be added in the horizontal plane to provide forward thrust. It might also be possible to get some lift by having an aerodynamic shaped couling.
  • Very cool! I'd been hoping to see that one in action after spotting a picture of it on their site. A VTOL UAV that could get decent efficiency in forward flight would be a big step forwards.

    Australia, actually.
  • That such an unstable looking airplane, they gota be using differential thrust for horizontal mode too.
Some one is very good with math. I would bet Germany.
