Hi,first up - my problem is with an APM 2.5 clone (arduflyer) - I know some of you don't want to assist with hardware not bought from 3dr store (which is fine) so I'll make this point clear at the beginning so you can stop reading. If you're still…

"Wow.
It appears they're in Karlsruhe. Warthox lives an hours drive away in Freiburg  .... just thinking him being in control of this thing."

OpticalFlow commented on John Ryan's blog post Amazing new invention!! - Somebody puts a camera on a heli!
"@Gregg Fletcher: if you think this  sort of activity is not regulated in Australia you're dreaming. It is nigh impossible to do commercial aerial photography with RC helis in Australia - you'd need a UAV operators license to do it legally and get…"

OpticalFlow commented on Pete Burnight's blog post Drive 10 Servos using only 2 Arduino Pins
"This is a nice idea for servos but if I understand your setup correctly I wouldn't recommend using this for driving ESCs on a multicopter. The reason is that you limit your update period to approximately 2 ms * 10, which is 50 Hz. Many standard ESCs…"

OpticalFlow commented on Geoffrey L. Barrows's blog post User programmable sub-gram optical flow / vision sensor
"Interesting. What eposure mode does the imaging sensor have: is it global shutter or rolling shutter? What frame rate can the sensor run at ? (I have a gut feeling the optical flow computation on the ATMega will be the limiting factor w.r.t frame…"

OpticalFlow commented on Mark Willis's blog post Aerial Mapping with multicopter
"I'm not familiar with Leica Photogrammetry Suite but I was wondering whether this could be done in PhotoModeler Scanner? This software package would still be more expensive than the Hexacopter itself but maybe it is cheaper than the Leica package…"

OpticalFlow commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Gaui autonomous-capable quadcopter now available--$349
"I guess this is for the ready-to-fly RC crowd. If you just want a stabilized multicopter and can do a bit of soldering you're probably better of with this http://www.kkmulticopter.com/ (that website just brings together some information that is…"

OpticalFlow commented on Jordi Muñoz's blog post ArdupilotMega Shield/Oilpan available for preorder
"The best part of this product is the Open Source code, which will support fixed-wing aircraft and multirotor vehicles , from quadcopters to helis and VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft.

Chris alluded to the helicopter development in some…"

OpticalFlow commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Futaba and Spektrum RC clones coming?
"There's also Spektrum DSM2 compatible clones, apparently $15 from HK, see http://www.rcmodelreviews.com/spektrum_clones.shtml"

OpticalFlow commented on CrashingDutchman's blog post Hobbyking FPV Transmitter & Video Camera 1/3-inch CCD camera
"@Tedro: as far as I know the Blade SR uses 2.4 GHz DSM2, so the camera would work but as per my posts above the video TX is likely to interfere with your radio link."

OpticalFlow commented on CrashingDutchman's blog post Hobbyking FPV Transmitter & Video Camera 1/3-inch CCD camera
"A few more thoughts regarding the 2.4 GHz video TX + 2.4 GHz RC link: if you use Spektrum/JR DSM2 it is not a good idea and here's why: http://www.rcmodelreviews.com/dsm2flaw.shtml

That's the camera I was thinking of (there is a long thread somewhere on rcgroups about it). On close inspection the board looks slightly different from the Hobbyking one. No,…"

OpticalFlow commented on CrashingDutchman's blog post Hobbyking FPV Transmitter & Video Camera 1/3-inch CCD camera
"Not talking from personal experience the general consensus on the rcgroups FPV forum seems to be that it is not a good idea to use 2.4 GHz video alongside 2.4 GHz RC. It appears to work but not reliably, especially with increasing range."

OpticalFlow replied to Mike Sousa's discussion And yet, another helicopter - autopilot question

Heading - need magnetometer
Barometric sensors may not work in the rotor downwash
Pitot tubes won't work in the rotor down wash
Ultrasound sensors for height above ground may not work due to vibrations…"

OpticalFlow commented on CrashingDutchman's blog post Hobbyking FPV Transmitter & Video Camera 1/3-inch CCD camera
"A camera that looks the same and has the same specs has been available on ebay for $25 incl. shipping for a while now. Also, this is not the only cheap 2.4 GHz TX. Have a look on the FPV forum on rcgroups for alternatives and you see that there are…"
