So it's been a long time since I was on diydrones but I wanted to reach out to a lot of you guys that fly fpv and happen to own a pair of 3D goggles.  Maybe an oculus rift or some cinimizers.  Now with the Transporter 3D (aka T3D) you can do 3d fpv or 2D with large fov using your old fpv gear or new gear from EMR Labs or someone elses' 3D cam or a home made set using two cameras.  This system gives you many options to use.  It takes in composite signals and outputs it to the goggles.  Now for the oculus rift, it has several key features to help with fpv:1.  It's powered through the Transporter 3D

2.  It passes the headtracker data of the rift to a headphone jack to use through your trainer ports

3.  Easy Ipd (Interpupillary Distance) adjustment on the unit for perfect 3D or 2D

4.  You can use it for 3D fpv using a 3d camera like the T3D cam or 2D re-sizable fpv. What I mean by re-sizeable is you can zoom the picture to be like your fatsharks or you can be like your in the cinema.

5.  Has low power consumption

Currently the indiegogo campaign has already hit it's funding in less than 24 hrs.  I wasn't sure if the community knew about this but I can't wait to fly like iron man.  I plan or doing a lot with this especially 3D since I've always wanted true bird vision not like I'm watching a screen, but super big fov 2D flying would be cool too.  Rift owners will know what I'm talking about and it will get a lot better when the commercial version comes out.  It's not something I can describe sorry, but it feels like an out of body experience.

You can find more info here http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/transporter3d/x/4182636

I plan on updating this blog with more stuff.  These are exciting times for fpv right now but this might push it further.

  • What lenses are on that T3D camera?  2.8?

  • @RC tech

    Thats one way of viewing through the rift.  Here are all the combinations known present that you can do to view through the rift:

    1.     1 cam 1 vtx = massive fov 2D viewing or any viewing since you can zoom the picture in and out.

    2.     1 3D cam 1 vtx = normal 3D

    3.     2 Cams 2vtx = byoc bring your own cams for full customizable 3D and redundancy in case you lose 1 link

    4.      I need to check on this one.  Not sure if there is one

    @Hughes

    3D on a single camera is done with mirrors, thats old school.  Nowadays it's done with a dual camera on a single board Which I refer to as 1 cam that does field sequential, processed on the board before it hits the vtx.  Sorry that I wasn't clear before.

  • Wake me up when we have 170', 4k resolution in 3D at 200hz refresh.

    Kidding...

    3D FPV has to be the next big thing in FPV. Failing that...HD at 200hz.

    If you can use 1 vtx for 3D, meaning two separate video sources-one for lefr, the other for right, then you must probably cut the framerate by two on the single video downlink?
    I do not understand the statement that current fpv users with a single cam could experience 3D? How can you get 3D with a single camera?
  • Distributor

    So the board takes two video streams and combine into one stream that is feeded to the Rift ?

    So below is whats from the website.  I missed some info.

    "The T3D supports 2D video, single channel encoded 3D video and dual channel 3D video for the ultimate resolution 3D experience.  To leverage the 3D capabilities we redesigned the 3D-Cam (T3D Edition) with higher performance sensors and T3D support for both single channel 3D and dual channel 3D video.  This gives camera package backers the ability to see 3D with their standard FPV system and provides the option to experiment with the ultimate dual channel 3D experience."

    So you can run it off of 1 vtx for 3d using a cam with single 3d encoded but two separate Cam systems make it better, I'll have to demonstrate this.

  • @Alejandro Martin Pirola

    Of course you choose two different channels that don't run into each other.  A different spin is nkw you have redundancy.  If you're normal fpv transmitter goes down you're out of luck.  With stereo cameras you can fly unless both go out. Different spin :).  Here's some test footage with two transmitters.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zEBtvfoE3c&list=UUbM8PtxYK5qhvK....  I think manufactures will come up with a single transmitter with dual channels to address this.

    @SaadTiwana

    Yes and no.  I can use two vtx with a 3d cam or two separate cams.  I can also use 1 vtx and 1 cam for 2D super fov ~100-110 degrees or any size since you can scale the picture.  The rift isn't the only supported device.  It's the main one due to the fov and the technology with built in high frequency head-tracker, but you can use this on other 3D goggles too like the Sony cinemizer.

  • Sounds good but... two wireless video links statistically doubles the chance of failure. Usually a video link have noise, think about how it will be with double noise.
    In the other hand, two TX screaming loud in 5.8 or 2.4 from the same point means shorter range? I hear about radio range reduction due over sized video TX power.
    Its a good start, but I will wait a year or two more before dig into 3D FPV.

    BTW anyone saw Shanghai Master 1000 final today? I saw a real time HD footage from a camera, that seems like a multicopter... because I cant explain how the camera "flu" over the net and then turn right in an open wide circle. No cables, no steadycam can do that but a multicopter.

  • So, basically you use two cameras on your airplane..and two video TX..and then two video RX on the receiver side. Then use this device followed by a Oclulus rift.....correct? (Just clarifying)

    Regards,Saad

  • I don't usually comment on anything , but this is BIG.   Someday when your lead poisoning (from all the soldering) moves you to tell  multicopter war stories to some helpless noob, you'll find yourself telling them about the time you saw this blog post.

    I've seen fpv simply in stereo 3D(not occulus) first hand and it made and immediate convert out of me.  In 110 fov it will be even more mind blowing.  these guys are blazing the trail.  Not only does this give you more of a rush, it improves your maneuverability exponentially.   Believe the hype.
