After many flights with my DIY frame consisting of 3DR Electronics stack and Landings legs, all the other parts are homemade form aluminium, i thought it's about time to launch from my balcony and take a spin down to the lake...
How easy was that...

Yes of course,
It's all about "Resonance" the balance between the mass to keep steady and the Stiffness of the spring controlling it. I use a Fibreglass bridge solid attached on the main copter frame as the "spring" component. The mass is the Gimbal and Camera together. It is of course only a GoPro Hero but this simple concept works for all stabilisation attempts of any kind.
I wish that I could use the same concept to attach the APM 2.5 PCB that would give me a resonance free accelerometer.
But sad enough this really only works for cameras since you can be sure that the camera will move with a certain latency comparing it to the main copter frame. That would be very very bad for the autopilot.
I am still balancing it out in order to find the perfect spring mass balance.
Hope that helps.
Good points Michael, it is your own responsibility and you obviously handle it quite well. I loved the video and the view you have make me envious!
Thank's Peter for your comment.
I do not recommend hand launch and land a multicopter. I did not attempt to set a bad example my experience in RC flying is extensive, for this specific home made copter I have invested at least 100 hours building and a lot more to tune it. I trust it's stability and performance.
to use a worn out expression: "at the of the any day..." It is your own responsibility. Not to forget this was said by a man whom survived growing up not wearing a bicycle helmet *smile*
Hand launching and recovering is not a risk if you have a good platform, know what you are doing and are in control and confident in your piloting skills. Warthox, myself and many others do it all the time, thousands of times a year without a problem. I as well were awaiting the screamers, glad we did not see any on this post :) or have I spoken to soon ;) I can easily cut my finger off making szechuan for my wife every weds of the week, if I do not know how to handle a knife and am not confident. Live life and stop worrying!!!!!
Neat video. I for one would never reach out and try to grab my copter. I've had to many unexplained flights to trust getting any part of my body or anyone else, close to my copter while armed or inflight. I saw another video blog where a Russian guy hand launched and hand caught his copter, there was snow on the ground. LOL. Thanks for sharing.
Haha.. that's great!! Next time just open a window, then you wont have to leave your couch. ;-)
