I thought it was about time to start a U.K group, mainly due to the time difference between us and USA, so members can discuss their issues here and hopefully get the help they require sooner? Also it possible there is someone living not far away from yourself that you could swap ideas with and get first hand help and advice with your project.

Sound like you know your stuff Rob..

  • Carbon has high tensile strength but it's very brittle and cannot take much in the way of shock and would catastrophically fail. Adding a core such as closed cell foam would make it too thick. Adding a core like soric defeats the object of least weight as soric absorbes resin.

A single layer of kevlar would do the trick. I make 25mm square arms in 1m lengths that weight about 120g and can easily take 100kg of load but make the same without the kevlar and they fail.

Good point Rob.. Although I would expect it`s pretty hard to break? we need some vids Martin of them being abused :)

  • Martin, very nice carbon frames. I was looking at making something myself but have been tied up with other things,

What is the finish of the carbon like? I've seen close up pics of the top domes before and was full of pits.

Any idea on the composite layup? One broken arm means game over for what is suspect a very expensive frame

Maybe not? I still am having the same problem with co-ordinates?

GPS co-ordinate problem has now been fixed by Randy..

    Well done.

Conditions were good on this flight, I tuned them on that day so have to test on a windy day still, but I will do and post the result here

I hope to build a test / working demo of the carbon frame soon, the over heating is not an issue as there are ventilation holes set around the top of the frame and the gap around the motor should allow better movement of air . GPS signals could be an issue for APM 2 when mounted inside, however I have not checked just yet, so I will post an update when I have some findings, I'm not rushing to build one, I'm taking the weekend off building and going flying for me :)

    Regards

    Martin

That's looking super Dean, what were the conditions like when you were flying?

A Newbie Question

Hello there,Have waited a long time to finally dive into DIY drone construction, but after a few years I wanted to jump into something that I love, but have only experienced through other people.I'm willing to spend sometime and money to do this right, buying parts instead of one ready to go kit; but of course I would like advice.I don't want to get into something too involved too early, as I think caution and going slow to get to grips is probably the best way with these things.Found this…

UK Newbie

Hi all,I am Jason - 42 years old in the Midlands UK.I have been a recreational quad flyer for just over a year - using a flywheel f450 with a go pro - no fpv set up yet.I run my own specialised cleaning business and have done for 10 years but i would like to become CAA certified and i am just about to book the course. I would like to then get a better set up and then slowly start doing some commercial work, probably free at first to build a portfolio before setting about trying to make a career…
