Joe Thompson commented on Andrew Tridgell's blog post An open letter to Paul from witespy
"@Oliver, I think this is a really solid point... I had thought I was just spoiled by reddit's ability to upvote/downvote posts, but the linear format of this board really does make it difficult to sort through a large mass of information."

Joe Thompson commented on Andrew Tridgell's blog post An open letter to Paul from witespy
"i was not aware of these disputes, had a lot of reading to do....
this all seems nutty to me. paul is a tiny vendor who is pumping out a lot of ready to fly quads, in addition to making a clone of open 3DR hardware. good for him!
its very…"

Joe Thompson replied to Adam Singer's discussion Pixhawk Flyaway
"i would expect a higher voltage to just burn up your esc electronics, not have any effect on the flight controller...

i don't know what pixhawk internals look like - perhaps a screw is loose, and the flight board is rattling around inside a case?…"

Joe Thompson replied to Adam Singer's discussion Pixhawk Flyaway
"My gut instinct would be to consider a 'failsafe' that decides when to ignore the accelerometers altogether. I understand that this could be problematic... how do you detect intense vibration? time averaging? min/max? And you can't just switch back…"

Joe Thompson replied to Adam Singer's discussion Pixhawk Flyaway
"i think this guy is right. as soon as your copter started moving (easy to tell by LAT because you were in loiter so long beforehand) your accelerometers are going nuts. Desired X & Y accel is +/-5 (centered at 0) and Z between -5 and -15 (centered…"

Joe Thompson replied to Joe Thompson's discussion Skywriting with a quadcopter?
"thanks randy! that odroid guide is great. based on the rpi references, i'm assuming the same guidelines will work? I was planning on using an rpi camera module because of its speed and IR capabilities. if you don't think its fast enough, I also have…"

Hello all,I've been using the APM platform for a few months now, and i'd really like to try a software project. Something i have in mind is following a predefined path for extended exposure photography. I've seen many instances of this, such as…

Joe Thompson replied to Martin Brousseau-Kiel's discussion My dad wants me to build a drone, what should I build?!
"chris, shouldn't you be off doing ceo things? :P its cool of you to be helping people.

martin, i recently built my first quad and walked through why i picked what i did (along with a few followup posts about why i've crashed and replaced parts).…"

Joe Thompson replied to Finnius's discussion Loiter Not Work
"do you have a legit apm? I've got the rctimer version, and their setup guide explicitly tells you to glue a piece of black foam over the barometer (haha)

Joe Thompson replied to Finnius's discussion Loiter Not Work
"haha, youre making this pretty painful man. just post the log file. i am going to use mission planner to look at the recorded data as outlined here http://copter.ardupilot.com/wiki/downloading-and-analyzing-data-log..."

Joe Thompson replied to Finnius's discussion Loiter Not Work
"Finnius, yes, you are JUST within the limits of what is considered acceptable, but without the logs no one else can check for you.

which tag are you looking at? There are:
CTUN: BarAlt - the altitude from the barometer
GPS: Alt - the altitude from…"

Joe Thompson commented on Joe Thompson's blog post f450 rebuild & diagnostics
"okay, if anyone reads this and cares to weigh in...

looking at my last log, i had repeat loss of transmitter signals (ERR 5, 1), paired with an RTL failsafe (MODE, RTL), followed by a return to normal (ERR 5, 0), (MODE, STABILIZE).

HOWEVER! in the…"

"@austin, thanks for the feedback.

I haven't tuned anything, i am using all default parameters. using 3.1.2.

The circumstances of my crash were a little strange - all within a few seconds, i switched into loiter mode, my low voltage buzzer started…"

Joe Thompson commented on Joe Thompson's blog post f450 rebuild & diagnostics
"Thanks guys.

@gary and mdisher; are the designs universal? Is it definite that the screw holes will line up, or should I just buy a whole new frame?
Frankly, I'd kind of like to move to an H quad, any suggestions?"

My quad is once again functioning after my last crash! f450 frame replacement arrived in about a week, but the replacement motor took over 3 weeks. Hard to wait for. So as soon as I got it in the mail, I flew the next morning at a beach in laporte -…
