Newbie with Questions. Well at least one

hi all.

Newbie here. In teh middle of building a scratch built Hexacopter and am aat the point where I need to start thinking of a ground station. I have a Windows XP based tablet that I think Mission planner should run on with out a problem. IT has USB and so should support a 3DR radio and perhaps event USB video in.

But here is the question. Does the device need an internet connection when I am in the field.

I ask becuase I have to assume the map needs to be downloaded at somepoint once the GPS lock is made. Now I admit that perhaps that can be done ahead of time, say before I go out the door.

 

Anyway, if anyone knows I would appreciate the info.

    I use a mifi while in the field or I prefetch.
  • An internet connection is necessary at the field if you want accurate GoogleEarth data, but you can get around that by prefetching your flight area.  Randy did a good job with a how-to here:
