Newbie here. In teh middle of building a scratch built Hexacopter and am aat the point where I need to start thinking of a ground station. I have a Windows XP based tablet that I think Mission planner should run on with out a problem. IT has USB and so should support a 3DR radio and perhaps event USB video in.
But here is the question. Does the device need an internet connection when I am in the field.
I ask becuase I have to assume the map needs to be downloaded at somepoint once the GPS lock is made. Now I admit that perhaps that can be done ahead of time, say before I go out the door.
Anyway, if anyone knows I would appreciate the info.

An internet connection is necessary at the field if you want accurate GoogleEarth data, but you can get around that by prefetching your flight area. Randy did a good job with a how-to here:
