RTL went up and up and up

Both lights were solid blue before take off.

I put it in RTL but it just went up and up, above 50 feet, I put it back in stabilize mode and was able to drop it back down. It was about 4xs above tree level so I'm sure it was above 50 feet

Any reason why it did this?

  • Edgar,

I think Bop is right. My worst crash until now was actually caused by a misunderstanding of RTL. My quad was so long out on a windy day that I would use RTL to bring it home, but I did it with low throttle so it just dived into some trees.

In RTL you can still control throttle, pitch, roll and yaw. Nice feature if something is in the way on the way home, but the pilot must know that the throttle should be in near hover point if you want to avoid climbing or falling.

As Randy writes loiter is the mode you should use if you want to stay on one point no matter if you have wind or not. Actually I think it works pretty ok on 2.8.1.

Calibrate won't help you in stabilize mode. It will just make sure you don't drift when there is no wind.

  • 1. You must have really short trees!

    2. Because in a Multirotor all movement is Essentially achieved by altering the throttle to 1 or more rotors, ipso facto raising throttle to all rotors will cause the craft to rise.

    3. Have you tried setting up channel 7 so that you trigger a "calibrate" while you are holding the craft perfectly hovering? Once you do that you shouldn't have trouble with it drifting and not hovering in place.

That happened to me once because I accidently had the throttle up high.

Did you look at the logs?
