About Me:

I am an 18 year old student studying Computer science and Computer Engineering at Christopher Newport University. I'm picking up the senior capstone project from last year, an Arducopter quadcopter, as well as working with an autonomous plane. I have over 9 years of RC experience, beginning with a 1/5 scale Great Planes Piper Cub balsa kit I started building when I was 9. Since then, I have built 2 more nitro models, a PT40 and a 2M wood powered glider, and my hanger includes 3 micro and ultra-micro planes, as well as an MCX2 and MX400 3D helicopters.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I am currently just entering the field of UAV's, head first. I have been around computers all my life, and have a significant amount of programming and micro-controller experience. I currently am doing an unofficial project with Christopher Newport University using Arducopter and Arduplane, and hope to continue to aerial photography, and live video processing to identify objects of interest and investigate them autonomously. The options are limitless, and projects such as 3D mapping rooms using Xbox Kinect are possible.

Austin Suhler replied to Randy's discussion Optical Flow discussion thread
"All-
I documented my experience 2 summers ago with Optical Flow and Lidar on a Pixhawk. I spent a lot of time working on optimizing my performance, and learned a lot along the way. It's been a little while, but if you have any questions, ask!
My…"

"Sorry for the long wait on replies! Been very busy with school and ramping up for the SUAS competition!
Vinh L: Yes, that is the optical flow sensor I was using. Back then the beta firmware was required for them to work together, but as far as I…"

"Fabio- I am using version 2 of the lidar. I powered it from an old Castle Creations 10A BECI had laying around, and it works perfectly. I would suggest trying again with PWM, as it worked almost instantly. Let me know if you hav any more questions!…"

Austin Suhler replied to Randy's discussion Copter-3.3 beta testing
"I had changed the EKF_GPS_TYPE parameter back to 0. It failed to even show stats about the GPS, i.e. Sats, hdop, etc.... After that didn't work, I actually went one step further and used a beta param file I saved from before I configured the OF,…"

Austin Suhler replied to Randy's discussion Copter-3.3 beta testing
"I wanted to report that after using OF, the pixhawk refused to acknowledge the existence of a GPS device, as well as refused to output FRsky Telem on SERIAL_2. Had to reflash to 3.2.1 for normal, non-OF flight. Also, it seems that the ARM warnings…"

"Randy- I agree, OF has been working very well. Check out my blog post about my experiences with it.There are still some bugs to get through, but it has been pretty exceptional so far!"

If all else fails, go outside into the sun, and check for correct operation. I have found lighting to make more of an impact than anything on performance. Also, keep an eye on what the surface below looks like. Optical Flow seems to be…"

I use standard loiter. Because of the conditions I am in (Nuclear reactor, even compass has problems), I disabled all the arm checks. I do not recommend it, but I am in a highly controlled environment, where I am the only one inside. You…"

Over the course of this summer, I have been working on a research project at the University of Virginia involving a flying camera platform indoors. Seeing as GPS is not a valid option for indoor loitering, I chose to use a combination of px4flow and…

"     For everyone interested, I have decided to use the PIXFlow with LIDAR as defined in the wiki for non-GPS loiter. As for navigation, I am setting up multiple RPi based access points with sort range wifi adapters in key locations around the test…"

The timeframe is as soon as possible, and the IRIS+ is an accessory to the main cyber security project, so I do not have too much of a budget to play around with. I am not really actively looking to develop a full system for my needs,…"

I know I do, I was wondering if someone could recommend a specific system that would provide some benefit in my situation, and how I should go about applying that system. Any thoughts? Thanks!"

I wanted to ask if anyone knows of the best way to either tether a IRIS+ quadcopter so it will hover relatively stationary, or provide a system for indoor navigation for a room. I am currently working on a cyber security research project at a…

"@Cornell: Glad to see you actually made the switch to Pixhawk as you planned, welcome to open source. I hate to admit it, but you're a step ahead of us on the auto-landing, at least as far as competition planes are concerned.
