Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

My UAV interest began with a final year University project in 2009 where I built and successfully flight tested a low-cost autopilot, based around the Arduino Mega.

Dan Wilson commented on Kirill's blog post Introducing SmartAP MAX
"@Thomas Butler: The bias of accelerometers, gyros, barometers, and other mems sensors is affected substantially by temperature. If not corrected, your IMU will be telling you 0.3 m/s/s, 3 deg/s etc when at rest. If you want an accurate state…"

Dan Wilson commented on moglos's blog post Anatomy of a 425km Flight
"That's really impressive, well done!"

Dan Wilson replied to muavdrones's discussion Current architecture of drone autopilots is wrong , Drone hardware architecture needs to be completely re-engineered.
"Sounds like you've done a lot of work! I think a few things need to be clarified though so here are my 2 cents:

Faster updates rates are better when using discrete sampling since the underlying continuous system can be better approximated - this is…"

Dan Wilson commented on DROTEK's blog post Drotek releases first L1 RTK GNSS compatible with PixHawk (ArduPilot/PX4)
"@Darius - RTKLIB is just an open source implementation of RTK algorithms that have been used by proprietary systems for some time.
Great module drotek, it looks very nice indeed!
One of the inherent draw backs of single frequency RTK is the time to…"

Dan Wilson commented on Dan Wilson's blog post Autonomous Airborne Docking for Refueling or Recharging
"@ JB
I suspect you would go through a lot of platforms in the development phase while attempting to retract a quad!
The drogue has a few magnets on the inside and the follower has a metal nose cone with magnetometer inside, but this system is…"

Dan Wilson commented on Dan Wilson's blog post Autonomous Airborne Docking for Refueling or Recharging
"Thanks for the kind words everyone, Ali and I really appreciate it. To address some of the comments:
@Thomas
Modulation is a good idea and definitely necessary if using one marker. We had to use multiple markers to get range information but you…"

Dan Wilson posted a blog post
This video shows some recent flight test results from my PhD research on autonomous UAV docking, that was conducted with the Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at The University of Sydney. To the best of our knowledge, these experiments are…

Dan Wilson replied to Doug Walmsley's discussion GPS Issues - Do I need a GPS Ground Plane & EMI Ring?
"Sorry for the slow reply. I use the beaglebone as a co-processor for my own stm32f4 based autopilot. There are some more details in the videos here and here if you're interested."

Dan Wilson replied to DG's discussion INAVerr- Is it the GPS or FC or neither?
"This information is quite valuable, for instance, if the GPS dies, this counter will suddenly skyrocket, or if the GPS UART connection is flakey, you may get sudden intermittent increases, or if you lose lock at high attitude you could use INAVerr…"

Dan Wilson replied to Doug Walmsley's discussion GPS Issues - Do I need a GPS Ground Plane & EMI Ring?
"I haven't had time to read all of this so I apologise if it's been said, but I'd like to share some thoughts/experiences.

The GPS signal is extremely weak. Things that jam or severely degrade gps in my experience include some cameras, Wii IR…"

Dan Wilson replied to DG's discussion INAVerr- Is it the GPS or FC or neither?
"Well if INAVerr counts missed gps measurements, it would definitely increment every second with the strange quirk that Im observing on the m8n. However, less consistent, intermittent missed measurements could be a result of interference, which is a…"

Dan Wilson replied to DG's discussion INAVerr- Is it the GPS or FC or neither?
"I don't know what INAVerr means, but I use a csgshop m8n in my own application and have noticed that if it's set to 5 Hz, after receiving 5 measurements it's skips a measurement. I found this by inspecting the derivative of the timestamp where every…"

Dan Wilson commented on Víctor Mayoral's blog post Erle-brain, an open hardware Linux autopilot
"This is great work Victor, but I'm also concerned about the decision to run non essential/experimental tasks on the same hardware as the safety critical flight control systems. Further, using the PRUs seems to restrict the software to the BBB which…"

Dan Wilson commented on Simon D. Levy's blog post The Extended Kalman Filter: An Interactive Tutorial
"Thanks for the tutorial Simon! Kalman filters are really powerful tools and developing a GPS/INS filter is a nice, relevant way to get started. Sure they've been implemented before but some fundamental understanding is even necessary to use existing…"

Dan Wilson commented on Andrew Tridgell's blog post First flight of ArduPilot on Linux
"Congratulations guys and nice write up! One thing to watch out for with the BBB is that the HDMI seems to jam GPS. From memory I was using the stock Angstrom distribution with a 3DR uBlox6 GPS and had to disable the HDMI via uEnv.txt. You could even…"
