Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

slowly but surely designing a recon UAV platform powered by 4 400mm EDF's (power generated by a kerosene powerd micro turbine/generator) equiped with 360 IR/color video, a modular system for mounting additional hardware. possibly a winch/claw setup and smoke screen generator later on down the road. all built on a carbon fiber/nomex honeycomb frame. the combined thrust from the EDF's will give it about a 20kg lifting capacity so it will have more than enough to carry/pick up large objects. GPS/smart phone controlled.

Anyone know any sources for affordable thermal imaging devices? I am in the process of putting togather (well planning and sourcing atleast, airframe is designed) a large gas powered all composite drone (3350mm wing span) designed to conduct grid…

"virt line scanning IR maybe? looks like it. probibly with something like this but i imagine it would be IR rather than a green laser. medium to high wattage fiber coupled IR lasers are pretty cheap these days and a low res IR camera would work…"

"FYI.... In my search for pre fab'd parts to build my gearboxes from so I only have to do a minumum of fabrication myself I came across VXB bearings. ultra small to huge, liniar motion and ceramic. you name it they prob got them. I'll be getting my…"

Im nearly finished with my quad build so far.... A couple of ups and downs here and there but all in all it went togather rather smoothly. I built this guy from scratch (still need to fab the motor mount/gearboxes) its a composite quad consisting of…

"it wouldnt cost that much. i get my kevlar for around $30 a yard (you can find it cheaper ive seen as low as $15/yd) and the kevlar yarn (continous strand non woven, i.e. raw)  is only around $15 for 1250yd. resin is around the same price for a pint…"

"you should try using a kevlar composite. superior abrasion resistance to fiberglass and it would cut out a few grams of weight. the best resin ive used so far for the kevlar and kevlar/carbon composites is Pacer's Z-poxy. strong stuff too, i made a…"

"hmmm... maybe a RS458 to usb BOB from sparkfun, it has the RJ45 and a 3 pin 'screw terminal'  nothing is attached so i plan to switch that terminal to a 3 pin headder. id have to make a PCB to make the Xtend's BOB have a RJ45 and 3 pin headder so it…"

"you probilly want to go with gas or glow. and maybe a bigger airframe than most of the drones here, 80" wingspan or better with alot of surface area to cut down on fuel usage and allow a decent payload. maybe a pusher powered by a DLA 112. as for…"

hmmm... this new sparkfun board seems promising, boasting a 40 mi line of sight range and 3000m indoor range and it should be easy enough to connect to the APM. the data transfer is a little slower than the XBee pro at 115.2kbps but should extend…
