About Me:

My beginnings were in electrical/mechanical engineering, but ended up as an IT infrastructure engineer (since 1990). English born but Scotland is my true home - been here since 1998. Gadgets have always captured my interest, and RC definitely fits the bill as one of my favourite areas for this. Photography, Snowboarding and MTBing are my other passions.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I was bought my first RC (toy) quadcopter for Xmas 2014 and have been totally hooked on RC ever since. First DIY build in April 2015 was an f450 flamewheel which soon became a stretched f550 hexa, which I still have (although rarely fly). This was too low powered (and far too flexible)though for what I had in mind so I soon started with a Tarot 680Pro framed hexa build (as a solo/dual operator video platform). For fun I started on a F330 build and quickly realised that the frame was too bendy, so switched to a 330 sized carbon fibre frame - all these copters controlled by arducopter 3.3/3.4 now. This is an awesome community, active and inspiring. I am ever grateful to the people here with their relentless passion for the hobby and willingness to assist (even newbies ;-). Truly top notch!

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Robert, the input to your scripts (even though the sensor is configured for kts in the sensors screen) will still be in m/s you need to do a translation in LUA to scale that to whichever scale you need."

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Robert, Glad you're finding the project interesting.
Are you aware of the configuration page which is part of the main lua script? The telemetry script has two screens. When you load it (long press on PAGE button) you see the main telemetry screen,…"

"shvars.speedUnits is set by your units selection on the configuration page (which is the code in confrun.lib), which writes the chosen value to your model config file. Its read back in from the config file when the code is initialised. I think you…"

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Robert, the telemetry sensor is configured for kts as you know (the log file shows the same), but the numeric value on the sensor is actually m/s. The teensy sends in m/s, but if the sensor on the taranis is configured in anything other than kts,…"

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Robert, That is an issue with the wiki (missed removing a bit) since the configuration page took over from the offset.lua mixer script - that was how we used to set the offsets and plane/copter before I rewrote the LUA scripts. Thanks for spotting…"

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Robert, did you follow the sensor setup for airspeed and groundspeed  detailed in the wiki? You need to configure the sensors to be in knots, then on the LUA page you can choose the units of choice for display. In my setup the airspeed on the LUA…"

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"By AoA you mean the pitch angle? Or the glide angle? If pitch angle, then I imagine this could be calculated in LUA code from the pitch value displayed by A4 (too complex for a calculated sensor). I've never really paid attention to this sensor but…"

"Robert, I'm still trying to figure out what you are doing wrong here. If you can please answer a few questions, this might help:

Are you running a Taranis X9 radio? So Taranis X9D Plus for instance? This has been written specifically for this,…"

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Robert, if you have followed the wiki then if you do a sensor discovery, you should see a sensor called simply GPS. You need to do this through a discovery (and not by adding manually into Taranis or through Companion - as neither will work)."

Paul Atherton replied to Rolf Blomgren's discussion APM MavLink to FrSky X8R S.Port converter
"Markus, I never test with logfiles, but instead in companion by entering values in the telemetry simulator screen.
Now, if you don't have your model yet configured, then you won't have done a telemetry sensor discovery, and from there configured all…"

OK, I already thought that the values have to get manipulated before getting displayed. They don't seem to be correct when discovered and displayed straight in the "find telemetry" menu.…"

"Yes Markus, This is all described in the Wiki if you care to read through.
You don't need to worry about compiling any new scripts you write, as OpenTx 2.2 takes care of this for you. You simply place the .lua file (your text version of the script)…"

Hi,

Here are some details:

Paul Atherton replied to Jim Calvert's discussion MAVlink OSD Battery A & B Configuration
"Jim, given I'm reading this on a mobile phone, I don't see your images, but I think you might be referring to voltage pins on the OSD board itself, the way you have it configured. I.e. To use these you would need to somehow connect your flight…"

Paul Atherton replied to Jim Calvert's discussion Config Tool Questions for MinimOSD Extra

"Jim,
Links to those 3 topics please?
To be honest, I rarely use MinimOSD these days - the RSSI choices it has are the same on most OSDs. My OSD of choice is PlayUAV OSD - its a graphics OSD rather than text, and there are a small group of guys who…"
