"I had the same problem but wanted to use 4.8.2 to get the hex file size down.

Copy the file
  C:\Program Files (x86)\MHV AVR Tools\bin\avrdude.conf

"I noticed this too. To reassure yourself unplug the gps and the hud should be stable, unless of course there is a problem with your gyro/accelerometer."

Authentic APM 2.6 working fine before with version 1.2.84 on Windows 7 32 bit.
Upgraded to Mission Planner 1.2.85, no longer connecting.
Downgraded back to 1.2.84, all fine now."
