In case you missed that I've been posting the technical comments on the related ArduRx album, I'm just using the Adafruit XBee adapter and it has a 5 to 3.3v regulator. So that way the display, Arduino, and XBee/adapter are all driven from a 5V supply. I don't seem to have any temp problems with the XBee Pro 900.
Forgot to ask: do you power the Xbee with 5v or is there a step down to 3.3v? I also have a 5v Pro Mini and Xbee mouted in a box, but I'm converting to 3.3v for Xbee and the converter + Xbee chip combined heat may be problematic. it seems the Xbee cuts itself when temperature exceeds some 60-65 degrees Celcius. If I could avoid the converter, it would be less hassle and less heat, though I do not know how long the Xbee will live with 5v! Thanks for your feedback.
