Right on. I have used it exactly that way (MTK + FTDI + Adapter) as a mini laptop GPS. Works better than my old RS-232 Garmin puck.
If you know for sure that you are only going to use it like that, you could consider soldering pins onto the marked pads near the battery and go directly to the FTDI cable, or solder the cable leads right to it. That's a mighty small USB GPS package right there.
It's just serial, because it was designed for using on UAV projects, not standalone.
You can use FTDI cable connecting with.this adapter. But if you want just specific USB GPS, it's not the case.
