  • I'm sure pilots of small planes would love to have the air all to themselves, but unfortunately the air is shared by things like birds, and us model aircraft flyers.  Many are posting warnings about laws without quoting anything concrete.

Here is an excerpt of the FAQ from the MAAC (Model Aircraft Association of Canada)

Q:How high can you fly an aircraft?

Answer:  The indoor flying height is normally restricted by the height of the ceiling. Depending on the location, there may well be restrictions on the maximum height to which a model may be flown. We must not endanger full sized aviation. It is always best to check to see if there are restrictions in your area. Note that there is a regulatory Rule 4.2#1 which states " R/C pilots shall yield the right of way of their model aircraft to man carrying piloted aircraft......”. Sometimes full size aircraft fly lower than they should and often large model gliders and even free flights fly more than a thousand meters high (normally this is done far from full size airports). Always check for limitations at the site that you wish to use.

So, from this I gather that how high you are allowed to fly is site dependent, and in fact, large aircraft are the ones that have a limitation, as well, on how low they can fly.

I have no idea where you would go to fly so high. International waters? It is worrying that people are posting these videos when there has been increased media attention as of late to the hobby. Video's showing users engaging in illegal flying is no good for the hobby whatsoever. Most would suggest to not be at it at all, including myself. At least do not post it on diydrones.

  • Well there has got to be someway to fly at high altitude without breaking the law. Were ore who should you go to? I mean it is not like the whole airspace were i am flying at is jammed with aircraft. And i wan't to fly high so if i need to get some permission to do that, then i just have to get one.

Seriously? Another example of completely disobeying laws in a video that is posted on DIYDRONES. Anyone that's been involved in import cars/etc. and has went through the scene where people were posting street racing videosonline, and see how it effected the hobby. Nothing to do with frequencies at all. Your flying an RC plane, well into the altitudes of small full-size aircraft..

This is the third example in a month that was reckless and irresponsible.

I'm open to start helping moderate the site if someone is interested.

  • I was just looking at part15, I am not sure exactly what frequency the 2.4 GHz transmitters. Seems that the mfrs of these radios aren't willing to share that info, or maybe aren't required to.

From what I can glean looks like max power for these radios is 1 watt, and they can only stay on a certain channel for 0.4 seconds, before the next hop. So it seems if they happen to interfere, it won't be long enough to cause problems.

Of course myself and probably Martin would like to see more hams anyway.

  • Hi Ryan, My call is W7RU. I agree that power Amplifiers can interfere with other freq's.

I operate on HF a 4-1000A grounded grid with -11 volts biased with 6500 volts on the plate.

It has clean signals with a software defined radio and a good tuned network to a broadband antenna.

I have never had any trouble with the FCC with this. As long as the transmissions are clean there is little problem.

  • You guys at least in the US may run into issues adding power boosters to standard RC radios.

Before you operate at a higher power, you may want to check, the FCC rules for requirements.

Not all bad though, as licensed Amateur Radio Operators, of which I am one, KC0QNB. You can do "special things" in "special frequency bands". Please consider getting your license, it is not that hard to do.

  • @Sgt Ric,

    >to fly in situations where he cannot rely on visuals, like at night or in clouds,

An instrument rating is not required for a US licensed Private Pilot (or higher) to fly at night. It's a beautiful thing. Night flying, that is.

As R/C, FPV, or UAV pilots it is our responsibilty to obtain, understand(God help us), and follow the laws of the land.
