Icarus commented on sander's blog post DeltaQuad VTOL completes 100KM autonomous mission carrying a 1KG payload
"Looks like you've achieved some nice cruise efficiency even with the lifting props, fine work indeed. I'm guessing the wing extensions help there. What amps is normal cruise at? 4s? Congrats on getting it all working together and tuned so well."

Icarus replied to Patrick Weeden's discussion Auto take off settings for catapult- please help
"Here are some settings I've found to work ok for full auto takeoffs on heavy x8s
Mode AUTO (obvious, but sometimes overlooked)
TKOFF_THR_MINSPD 0TKOFF_THR_MINACC 5TKOFF_THR_DELAY 5TKOFF_TDRAG_ELEV 0 (not used)TKOFF_TDRAG_SPD1 0 (not…"

Icarus replied to Patrick Weeden's discussion Auto take off settings for catapult- please help
"Hi Patrick,
I second the idea of a slightly lower pitch prop, it's like having a lower gear to climb a hill. You may take a hit on cruise speed but it shouldn't be much.
Dwgsparky is right, a lower angle launch will give you more acceleration, but…"

Icarus replied to u4eake's discussion X8 distance/endurance records in X8
"ah, it was a NTM Prop Drive Series 4238 750kv / 785w.

I think I can possibly eek a little more efficiency out of the x8, with a fixed prop and some cruise speed tuning. with li-ion cells, 150km should be no problem too."

Icarus replied to u4eake's discussion X8 distance/endurance records in X8
"yup, that was my 113km  flight from yesterday. here's the setup:
batts were 3 x tunrigy 8400mah 3S, total 25.2 amps. All up weight 3.8kg.prop is a folding 14x8.
APM 2.6 controlled the entire flight, from full auto bungee launch to the landing. No…"

Icarus commented on pixhawk's blog post QGroundControl with Google Earth 3D Trees
"Same as above, I have struggled to find out how to display google earth with qgroundcontrol, I can't figure it out at all. any advice? . os x 10.9. the manual is no help.   it will be awesome when this is all working. "

Icarus replied to Brian S's discussion My X8 in X8
"yes, that's all correct. good luck with it. remember not to move the airframe for a minute or so after powering up the APM at the field. "

Icarus replied to Brian S's discussion My X8 in X8
"Hi Brian,
I had exactly the same issue when first running an APM in x8s. It was solved by levelling the airframe to be in a slightly nose up attitude. If you sit the airframe on a flat surface and lift the nose so the "chin" lump is about 5cm up,…"

Icarus replied to Andy Demartini's discussion X-8 Leveling Reference Point in X8
"I've found the best airframe performance (trim and efficiency) to be slightly nose high, about 3 or 4 degrees AoA. I just put the x8 on a level surface and put the lid under the nose to lift it about 1 inch, that gives a few degrees nose up and it…"
