James Kirkley replied to flying's discussion Telemetry stream rates
"I don't think the data throughput rate you desire is possible without very extreme customization. Assuming that you could modify the 3DR-Radio Firmware, APM Firmware, and Ground Station Software to suit your needs, you have the following issues to…"

Ok...this is probably a stupid question. But is it detremental to test radios that are programmed to their maximum power output (20dB)...sitting side by side.Just curious...I don't want to fry anything....

James Kirkley replied to James Kirkley's discussion How well do plain wire antennas work?
"Thanks guys for the responses. It sounds like there's no magic to this...that a wire 1/4 of the wavelength will more or less work.
I guess it all boils down to what precision you're after.
Which reminds me of a story. Years ago I was interested in…"

I notice that the stock 3DR Radio antennas have a gain of 2dB..What's the gain(if any) of a plain wire antenna?I'm looking at a 433 transceiver board RFM22B from Spark Fun. I has a different Si RF chip. It's the Si4432 chip which is strictly a radio…

Can you use these 3DR Radios as just a generic pass through of information? How tightly are they linked to the MAVLink Protocol used by theMission Planner and APM2 firmware? From looking over the Wiki Pages it seems the only parameter settings that…

What telemetry systems are usually included in a UAV setups? There must be a heiarcy of which instrumentation to choose first. I know I want to fly waypoints, so the GPS is a requirement.Barometers and airspeed indicators are a one off. Get them if…

James Kirkley replied to James Kirkley's discussion Can you install the software in Windows in any directory and any drive.
"Sorry, my bad, I'm getting mixed up. I was installing the development software for arduino boards from the arduino website. So I'm posting my question in the wrong spot.
But I do at some point want to install Mission Planner for a APM2 board. I…"

This software doesn't have a Windows installer per se. It's just an unzip into a directory.Of course you have can't tinker with any of the subdirectories.I have Windows 7 so can I install it anywhere. I have an I: drive that is empty and would like…

James Kirkley replied to Richard's discussion First APM2 Build for Aerial Photography to create DEM,DSM for GIS purposes - Ursus Airframe
"No Richard, I have no experience with the Canon Camera firmware hacks, I'm pretty much a newbie to all of this. I do want to get into the APM2 and 3DR radios. Also maybe mount a GoPro type camera. But I'm not so much interested in FPV. But before…"

James Kirkley replied to Richard's discussion First APM2 Build for Aerial Photography to create DEM,DSM for GIS purposes - Ursus Airframe
"On your vibration issue and blurred pictures. There was one set of your pictures showing your large plane labled "tidying the wires" and "insuite camera". It looked like your camera was housed in a fixed internal box made with plywood or bulsa, with…"

James Kirkley replied to James Kirkley's discussion Just a couple newbie "Where to Start" questions.
"To add to my above post...I'm really only interested in autopilot(UAV).
At this point, I'm not interested in any sort of FPV functionality."
