I'm one of those people that Nathaniel mentioned about having the larger props on the bottom.  Simple really, is that I just wanted bigger props on it. (:

It'll fly more than fine with 10s everywhere.

  • Thanks Nathaniel.  I'llo go with the 10X4.7 all round then and give it a try.

    Gary,

On a Y6B frame all the top motors should rotate CW and would use the "SFP" props, and all the bottom motors should rotate CCW and would use the "SF" props. All props should be 10"x4.7" size. Some people use the larger 11"x4.7" "SF"props on the bottom motors. If you search the threads you will find many theories as to why this may or may not be more efficient. Personally I think it flies just fine stock with the 10" props top and bottom.

  • Nathaniel, hope you or someone can answer this question.  The instructions call for these props, but there is no description as to what motor they go to.

    10 x 4.7 SF (normal) propellers (1)
    10 x 4.7 SFP (pusher) propellers (2)
    11 x 4.7 SFP (pusher) propellers (1)
    11 x 4.7 SF (normal) propellers (2)

    I'm assuming the

    11 x 4.7 SFP (pusher) propellers (1)
    10 x 4.7 SF (normal) propellers (1)

go one the real Arm.  Is that correct?

    meavydev,

Have you had any flights with your Y6B on any other firmware? What is your config, battery, motors, props, etc.? Is this a 3DR Y6 or another frame? Do you know what the takeoff weight is?

    Regards,

    Nathaniel ~KD2DEY

  • I just managed my first takeoff with my Y6B. It was delayed by compass calibration issues with APM 2 on the Mac with 3.2.

Unfortunately everything not quite right as maximum height was about 2 feet on full throttle and it tipped on landing breaking a prop and GPS mast...

I'm going to try another ESC calibration after resetting all settings to defaults and doing a full recalibration in APM.

  • Thanks Nathaniel, I managed to get everything tucked into the Y6 and for sure it is a very tight fit.  The Power Module was my big hang up.  After routing several different ways I managed to tuck it in.  Just have to finish up now and should be flying in about two weeks when my son comes in for Thanksgiving.

Hey Guy, what's the problem? PDB is a bit of a tight fit? :) Start with finding a good position for ESC 3+4, plug them in where necessary, route the power leads then plug in ESC 2+5 and route those PWR leads, finish up with 1+2. Dont forget the PM. No matter what you do it will be a tight fit; try to twist your wires wherever possible to decrease the mag field interference.

  • Wow! Anyone still around this forum?  I just acquired a 3DR V6B and have been having fun building.  Thanks Chris for those images of your internals but I'm still having issues positioning the power module.  I may have it worked out but still need to make sure.

Does anyone still build these? What's the state of affiars for DIY and coaxial hexacopter builds?

I've been fascinated with Y6 designs for years and have been wanting to craft my own but never had the finances to do so. FInally came into some extra cashflow and want to put it towards a drone. I just became FAA certified and have been doing this commercially as a side hustle in tourism. I currenlty have experience with DJI products. The allure of creating my own has always stuck though, as a fun side project. I've seen Y6 builds that are big enough to carry a DSLR and that's the direction I…

3DR Specs??

Does anyone have specs for 3DR Y6?  I'm looking for dimensions on all parts, but mostly for the main plates.  I can't find any spare parts, so I figured I'd manufacture my own.  I have a second Y6, but it has the old original top plate and I'd like to replace it with the one that supports the GoPro gimbal. Thanks

Pixhawk reading 0V

Hi, guys.  I know the 3DR Y6 is not as popular as it used to be, but I still need some help.  I recently dusted off my Y6 and started using it again.  I even installed a new Hero4 for 4K video with a new lens (to get rid of the fisheye effect)...The issue I have (well, one of them!) is that regardless if I connect through the MavLink or the USB cable directly to the Pixhawk, the pixhawk is reading 0.0V from the battery.  Now, the interesting thing is that BATTERY_VOLTAGE2 is reading correctly,…
