I thought it was about time to start a U.K group, mainly due to the time difference between us and USA, so members can discuss their issues here and hopefully get the help they require sooner? Also it possible there is someone living not far away from yourself that you could swap ideas with and get first hand help and advice with your project.

Yeah, USB works fine, and I am using MAVLink 1.0 version of APM Planner and Arducopter 2.6 which corresponds Ithink.
I had a similar problem with my 3DR and it turned out to be the version of MAVLink the Mission Planner was using. The installer installs 2 versions of the planner. One using MAVLink 0.9 and one using 1.0. It runs 0.9 by default but there is a second launcher in the installation directory for 1.0. You need to choose the version that matches what your APM is using.
Can you connect successfully via USB?
I've not familiar with the 3dr radios but on all transeivers you you should have a Tx and RX. One the air unit link these connections and power it up. Now with the ground unit connected to a laptop connect a terminal program to the port the ground unit is on. If they are paired correctly anything sent to the air radio should be echoed back to the terminal program. That will check basic send/receive functionality.
The blinking LED at 1hz should be the heartbeat.
My 433 Mhz 3dr telemetry units are not working as expected (details here: http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/433-mhz-radios-will-bind-and-conf...) essentially they bind and config utility works, but I am getting a heartbeat error with missionplanner. Anyone encountered this one before?
