About Me:

I'm an engineer on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope at Brookhaven National Laboratory. I specialize in optical and mechanical design.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

Primarily automation and navigation (many ideas). Seems like a lot could be done developing or adapting a cheap on-board LIDAR system. I also have ideas for control after rotor failure on a quadcopter, self-charging, and a follow-me type functionality. I would also like to try some fun things having a drone interact by non-verbal aural alerts. I've been inspired by "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" and more recently the drones from "Oblivion". My quadcopter design implements an accessory cage system, where boards/instruments/sensors can slip on and off in a modular way.

"Re: Uncoordinated flight.
Yes, it would be fun to have motion associated with the flight but one would be very limited in regards to simulating realistic flight forces on a multirotor.
With a motion simulator for a fixed-wing plane you could at…"

"> I am working on something with close to the same intention where I can have more things covered and protected.
Neat. Protection would be nice. I'm trying to think of how it might be made rain proof.

"Max size: The arms are split into two parts, and they're about 170mm long and 40mm wide at the widest point. I can get two complete arms on the 200x250mm built plate on my Makergear M2.

Brandon, thanks! Right now they detach with two machine screws…"

"Wow I'm glad people like it.
Flight times: Rather terrible right now. I haven't flown continuously for long enough to time it accurately but I'm pretty sure it's in the 4-5 minute range with a 2.2Ah battery. I wonder just how far away it is from the…"

I've been working on an accessory-cage based quadcopter design to have a modular way of adding and removing components. The intent is to avoid the rubber-band and tape method of attaching components to the airframe. The accessory cage is comprised…

Greetings all,I think this is my first post here, and I would like to share a design I came up with.I'm flying by manual-control only at the moment (first flights were this weekend) but my objective is to work on automated flight. Also, I've been…
