Cheap CNC opportunity

itsalive2.full.JPG?1294473734
I just wanted to post this here to let the DIY Drones community aware of this limited time opportunity to procure a complete small scale CNC kit for $390 or an assembled version for $520 on kickstarter.com. This opportunity ends MONDAY JAN 10, 11:59PM EST. I am not associated with this project but I think it is pretty neat what the MyDIYcnc.com owner Stephen McGloughlin is trying to do with it. Check out his kickstarter page for more information.

  •  @ bGatti Can you post a picture of it here or show where it exist online?
  • I have a bigger version of such a machine - it's pretty useful (cut surface mount circuits etc...)

This design looks reasonable - the challenge is rigidity. I wish Steven well.

  • I also signed up for the $390 - build it yourself kit. This will be my first step into getting into small scale machining. Super excited for the kits to ship.
  • Hi David, Chris, et. al., Thanks for the post about my DIY Desktop CNC Machine. This is a really cool website so I thought I'd join. It's been many years but I used to build model airplanes and the concept of DIY Drones is intriguing. Maybe theres a new Kickstarter project in there somewhere  :)

I did extensive costing on the machine and kits in advance of the project and should be fine with the costing. I really am looking forward to seeing what this group creates with the DIY Desktop CNC Machine.

Thanks you all for your support and this post.

    Stephen

  • I've been looking for an affordable CNC for some time. Saw this posting and went for the $390 kit. The is a similar sized CNC by a company called Zen Works that sells for approximately the same price so it seem reasonable that it can be produced for this price. In the project blog, he says that he is taking 3D printing into consideration based on the MakerBot print head. Thanks David for making us aware of this opportunity.

Wish I could afford to spend the $$ now, so many things I could build...  Think I may choose the sponsor this project for $12 and get a set of plans.

  • I'm in for an assembled one as well. Looks like a great kit for getting into machining and cnc work.
  • I looked at it too. Seems like a pretty good deal even just for the cartesian platform. Might be able to swap out the dremel for an extruder and get a nice "little" 3d printer.
  • I went for the $390 kit...I don't think the prices can be raised and I am not sure what kind of contractual obligations that kickstarter project owners have to supporters. I have been following this particular project closely and I think Stephen is up to the challenge...he has at least done an excellent job of managing the kickstarter portion so far.

Very exciting! I signed up for an assembled one. I wonder what will happen if he discovers that he can't actually sell them assembled at $520. Can he raise the price or cancel these orders?  Hardware is always more expensive to make than people expect...
