The pilot of the Phantom that crashed on a Manhattan street earlier this month has been arrested, ABC reports:

David Zablidowsky of Brooklyn has been charged with "Reckless Endangerment" for allegedly losing control of a helicopter drone at "an unreasonable height creating a substantial risk of serious physical injury".

  • Unfortunately this kind of incident are bound to happen more and more...why ??? because some people are not very  “reasonable “...or whatever you want to called . This activity , unfortunately, trough brainless people like the one shown in this video would end up making this activity regulated- (at a price , of course )-. If people were reasonable we will not need traffic lights.... unfortunately that is not the case.

  • Back in the 60s there was a movement to ban skateboards. I think its a case of its new so us old farts need to stop it because "we don't like change or new things". Come to think of it, didn't they try to stop mobile phones in schools a decade or 2 ago?

The FAA love the power, so they would like to control tennis balls, if they could. One day when they're everywhere, no-one will care. You can't be part of something new and avoid this problem.

  • @Doc

This remind me an old process with a driver of a RV recreative vehicle who did go back in his RV (while on the road...) to prepare his coffee (and crashed...) and in the end he did win the trial process with RV company because in the RV user manual was not mentioned he can not quit the driver place...

  • So, in brief, what was the final verdict for the 'reckless flight' ;) ??

    My verdict is Guilty

$20,000 fine and Banned from owning an RC aircraft for 12 months, plus whatever the penalty the FAA impose.

    Harsh? So it should be.

    Might wake up the idiots.

Did you see The Gothamist. They say he's guilty of "nearly decapitating a passing businessman"

I didn't know you could replace the Phantom's props with straight (Sweeney Todd) razors.

  • So, in brief, what was the final verdict for the 'reckless flight' ;) ??

  • @ Doc, Bingo, bingo, bingo. See my previous post with a link to ShamWow guy basically saying that.

  • What if his defense is that he did not act recklessly as the phantom was supposed to RTL, and it was his expectation, due to manufacturers claims, that it would do so?

I s'pose as the manufacturers also advise against flying in built up areas should protect them from a knee jerk reaction.

  • He deserves what he gets, but I do not think they will try to push anything more than reckless endangerment, for fear that they push too far and the defense takes them apart on whatever other charges they try and push. I don't think this will be a bad thing for the community actually.... It might be good. It could be one of the first cases of actual legal punishment from a drone related incident, and means we can get the people who really shouldn't be flying out of the airspace.

  • If this sticks, it's going to change everything in the US.

No not really. What he did was reckless and endangered the populous below by creating a an object falling out of the sky. If someone decided to through there cell phone off the 40th floor he would be guilty of the same thing. Note that the charge wasn't "Recklessly using a UAV" Although if this behavior persists it could get added to the Penal code. And I'm pretty sure it would be a Federal offense at that point. But since no such law exists, hell get Reckless Endangerment and probably serve a fine and maybe some jail time..................I think there is allot of leeway for sentencing on that charge, although I'm sure the judge will be under pressure to make an example of him, less the judge be lampooned in the press.

  • What a mong
