About Me:

Always been interested in RC airplanes, but now shifting to UAV quadcopters

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

At home I have a 3DR Quad with a 2 axis stabilized mount for my GoPro HD Hero 2 as well as a AR.Drone 2.0. I also am developing a Search-and-Rescue UAV at work that is based off a 3DR Hex.

"Here's a couple pics of the quads we're using.  Like Chris said, they're pretty standard quads with a small payload box underneath that carries our Beaglebone stack.  We designed a custom cape for the BeagleBone Black that can carry the two Xbees as…"

As a DIY enthusiast I'm puzzled why 3DR has drastically scaled back the replacement parts it sells for its vehicles.  Usually in a crash parts like the motors, props, arms, etc are damaged and 3DR continues to sell those parts.  But occasionally…

"We've done exactly that.  The Pixhawk fits fine and we mounted a Tarot T-2D on the front of our Y6."

"Yeah, we miss the hexa's.  They were easy to add larger motors and propellers to increase the flight time."

I'm curious what kind of flight times people are getting with a stock 3DR Y6?  We flew last week with a fairly light payload (Tarot T-2D and GoPro) with a 5400mAh battery (Thunder Power G8 Pro Lite), and only got about 12 minutes of flight time.

"Coming from the perspective of flying these vehicles at home and at work (I'm on the team that took the NASA video) you are always evaluating the risks.  It is a balancing act taking video, especially of a moving object, getting as close as possible…"

"I'm sure you could get more efficient with larger than 12" props, but we only looked at 9-12" props.  We tested 4 different motors (850kV, 880kV, 900kV, and 950kV) with 7 different props (9x47, 10x45, 10x47, 11x47, 12x38, 12x45, and 12x6).  Here's a…"

"R, we were focused on long flight times so we went with batteries that maximized the mAh/g.  The batteries we chose are ThunderPower Pro Lite MS series, 6000mAh 3S.  Each battery weighs 381g for a total battery weight of around 3.4 pounds.  Our…"

Garrick Merrill replied to Randy's discussion ArduCopter-3.0.1 released!
"Got a tip for anyone who like us has occasional GPS glitches during auto missions.  We've come up with a quick procedure for recovering the auto mission without landing:

1.  Once GPS glitch is observed (usually visually) switch to Alt-Hold
2. …"
