About Me:

I study Aerospace Engineering at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. It is both my career and my hobby.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I built a quadcopter while I was on exchange in China, and quickly caught multicopteritis. Now I'm part of the RMIT UAS research team, and am currently building a Y6 for myself, as well as some geological survey drones for various organisations.

Patrick Leschinski replied to Randy's discussion figuring out the Antenna Tracker
"Thanks for the help!I'm using an APM 2.6.What should happen? It should move to point at the aircraft without me doing anything? If I move the tripod around, should the antenna dynamically move to keep pointing at the aircraft?"

Patrick Leschinski replied to Randy's discussion figuring out the Antenna Tracker
"Thanks to everyone who's worked on this so far - I'm really looking forward to using it!Question: I've built it all, now what do I do? The AT Manual stops there. When I have a radio connected with the same netID as the aircraft, does it automatically…"

A question for the piksi users:I'm using a piksi GPS on my pixhawk quadcopter. I'm just using single precision now, while I wait for RTK to be enabled on Arducopter. The problem is, the hdop is terrible! It usually hangs around 13, and sometimes gets…

Hi everyone,Mission planner is telling me I have a failsafe activated. But that's all. How can I actually find out which failsafe has been tripped?Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I can't find anywhere where I can actually see if it's the battery,…

Patrick Leschinski replied to airmazingvideo.com's discussion Pixhawk with BaseCam (AlexMos) SimpleBGC Gimbal
"The pixhawk native control only uses servos. A brushless gimbal is MUCH smoother. Servos are fine for keeping the camera where you want it for surveying or something, but for cinematography, you need a brushless like Alexmos, STorM32 or BruGi"

Patrick Leschinski replied to Patrick Leschinski's discussion Swift Nav Piksi
"The units themselves have full RTK capability with the supplied software, but as yet only normal single-point GPS is supported on Ardupilot systems."

Hey everyone,There was a lot of talk about the Swift Piksi RTK GPS mid-last year. The last thing I can find is that drivers were included in the ardupilot firmware such that it supported the Piksi as a normal GPS, but as yet without RTK…

Patrick Leschinski replied to Patrick Leschinski's discussion 915MHz Telemetry cuts out... any ideas?
"Huh I just looked at the specifications of that antenna and not at the picture. The specs say SMA plug, but the picture is clearly RP-SMA, which would indeed fit your radio. Sloppy work, jDrones. Thanks for bringing my attention to that other thread.…"

Patrick Leschinski replied to Patrick Leschinski's discussion 915MHz Telemetry cuts out... any ideas?
"That kind of antenna would indeed extend the range of your telemetry set. However, you'll fall into exactly the same trap as I did, which lead to the creation of this thread. The connector of the antenna is SMA, whereas the 3DR radio has an RP-SMA…"

Hi everyone,I have a Bixler 2 with APM 2.5 and 915MHz telemetry. It flies really well and I've never had any problems with it. However, I've never flown it particularly far away from me. I have tried to do a few surveys on auto mode recently, and…
