fpv frequency

Hi,

Can i fly 5 miles using a helical 12db, line of sight on 5.8 ghz?

Will i be able to fly above the clouds?

Am i better off just switching to 1.3 ghz?

Thanks

Damo

  • You can use this online calculator to estimate your reception range based upon frequency, transmitter power and types of antennas. I've found it to be reasonably accurate, if a little optimistic. I assume my range will be a bit less than predicted.

  • I think the point is, and this is not aimed directly at you. Is that there are alot of people asking "silly questions" like how can I fly above the clouds?, how can I fly behind buildings?..... the list goes on.

Now if asked in the correct way, providing information on what exactly you want to do and why the flight will be safe, that is ok. But with the hobby as it is at the moment we all need to make people aware of the rules, what should be common sence.

Im sure you can understand that if someone could ask the question how can I fly above the coulds and everyone tell's them without explaining the risk's there would have probably been a few more accidents to date. You even said yourself that there are too many people how dont understand the laws.

Like I say this is not aimed at you its just an example. you still didnt anwser my questions though:

What are you developing that needs to fly abouve the clouds?

where will you be making the flight?

Yes, as you say, if this is a designated Danger zone, and you have clearance to fly there, then of course it's fine.

Your first post made no reference of this...

With that in mind... Assuming all is legit....

Use as low a frequency as possible, and as high a gain receiving antenna as possible, with a tracking antenna....

As I don't know what country you are in.... I can't recommend a frequency...

no, without appropriate power it, it will fail.    with appropriate power it will be illegal.

no. it's illegal to fly above 400ft.   don't do it.  it's also illegal to fly without line-of-sight to your aircraft, and if it's above the clouds, and you're below them, that's also then illegal for another reason.... the operator can't see the aircraft.

no. it's illegal in many countries to use that frequency for video transmission.

Also, it sounds like you need to do more homework.   please.

    • Although going over 25mw on 5.8ghz (the only frequency legally permitted in the UK for video transmission besides 2.4ghz) is illegal in the UK I'm willing to bet the vast majority of FPV flyers here are using 600mw or more as there is very little enforcement here..... at the moment.

The other bonus is that 4miles out from any active airport we are allowed up to 1000ft above the surface thanks to a general exemption bought in in April 2014 - http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/ORS4%20No.%201011%20Small%20Unmanned%2...

    • Interesting I haven't come across that before, thank you!!

Where did you get four miles from? Can't find that.

Also, this document if for fpv. I wonder if you would still be covered without fpv up to 1000th following the same rules.

    • It might vary between airfields, but I used - http://notaminfo.com/ukmap

On the right hand panel, under NOTAM details just leave "aerodrome info" slected, and under airspce details select "show default airspace". That then show's you where not to fly and is more accurate for the UK than the mission planner airport warnings.

As I'm in Lancing I have to travel away from Shoreham airport to clear the class G airspace which is around 4 miles from the central runway outwards. Though I think you can legally fly in class G, I've seen how low they approach within that 4 mile area and I wouldn't want to be up with them at the same time lol.

As far as I'm aware if your allowed 1000ft FPV there is no reason why you shouldn't be allowed up 1000ft without as you will have a better situational awareness as long as you still have an unassisted view of the craft.

    • Depends which country you are in
    • Just because there are no laws against it in your country (yet), doesnt mean it is safe and correct to do. Have a read here: http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=FAA-2014-0396

Just because this dosent affect you yet dosen't mean you should ignore it!!!

    • You cannot speak for the entire world based upon EU/German law.

How about the UAE and their endless deserts, that wouldn't be unsafe nor illegal, just to name one.  Stop jumping to conclusions, it is important that the technology develops, and if this can be done safely within local resources then we should actively encourage it.
