Some of you might have read my blog posts about ny autonomous sailboat. It is now time to implement my control algorithms on the APM. My plan is to start with the APMrover code and replace some parts with my code. There are a few changes that i need…

"Thank you Dermot! I think a wingsail could be a good solution especially if you want a rugged solution for extended autonomous missions. "

"I am really no expert on real flying, but i think that if you plan on target  for example glider pilots it is really important to have a high quality air speed presentation and be very careful where you display GPS-speed. If you try to create a…"

"Mathtew. I think it is possible if i use a theoretical speed of the boat. A boat my size will never go very fast and reach maximum speed at a relatively low wind speed. For my simulator i am using a simple polar chart to predict the boat speed and…"

"@Miguel
On my real boat i am currently measuring wind angle but in my simulator i "measure" wind speed and use it to calculate wind direction. I will see what i can find out this winter before i decide to put a wind speed meter on the boat."

"That look cool, but at the same time to advanced for my math skills. I really need some more "randomness" to make the simulation more realistic. Next step is to add current and drift to the model. "

This is the third update about my attempts to build an autonomous sailboat with the goal to have it sail by itself next spring. My first plan for simulation and hardware in the loop simulation was to use the Sail simulator game. You can read more…

"Harry,
What do you want to know?  :)
Since i wrote the blog post i have improved the simulation environment. I have implemented a simple PID control loop to keep the simulator boat at a desired heading.

I have a small program on the simulator…"

"So far i have only used the APM libraries to read the sensors for logging purposes. I think using the Rover project as a start is a great idea. The only problem is that i will probably need ground station features that aren't available in existing…"

"I shot a short video on my second test sail. But watching it would just make you fall asleep. Almost no wind so the boat moved sloooowly past the camera."

Things are slowly moving forward. The status right now is:Boat has done some sea trials. It sails, and it sails better than expected.Windvane is integrated with APM using a separate Arduino nano and I2C to the APMAPM installed in boat with GPS,…

"That is a cool sail configuration. My solution is really simple. If you look at the image of the mast you can see a carbon fiber rod with two ball bearings. The bearings fit in a glass fiber tube that is fixed in the hull. The tube is about 10 cm…"

"Hi Timo,
I just did my first sea trials this weekend. The IOM is a really good sailboat! My sail worked ok, but there is definitely room for improvements. It would be really interesting to see your design.
Maybe crossing the Baltic would be a good…"

"Hej Ola,
Vill du prata lite om detta på svenska får du gärna kontakta mig. magnus@leijonborg.se. Ingen erfarenhet av Afrika, men har byggt några plan som kanske skulle kunna göra jobbet.
