Rob Valentine replied to Justin H.'s discussion IRIS upgrade project in IRIS
"Thank you for the explanation, Muhammad. It sounds like a little empirical experimentation is in order."

Rob Valentine replied to Justin H.'s discussion IRIS upgrade project in IRIS
"Thanks. I think this is the one you are referring to?
I understand about the radiation pattern. No free lunch there. I was hoping someone had some thoughts on better placement of the internal antennae or something. As you can see in the picture…"

"I would also be interested in eliminating the occasional ~1s warning blips from the (2.4) FrSky RC Tx. They are usually of no consequence, but have also triggered an RTL from about 150m. (I now know a quick flip of the flight mode switch will return…"

Rob Valentine replied to vf171's discussion CG of Iris and flight performance at end of high speed runs. in IRIS
"Realize, there is no such thing as the IRIS-M Pro yet, as is hasn't been released. All I've ever seen is the marketing PDF. FWIW, my IRIS+ is basically the same thing as an IRIS-M, as it has the same DroneDeploy module installed (the bit in the…"

"With your laptop, all you need is a regular old USB to micro-USB cable (like comes with most android phones). You can plug straight into the IRIS+ or plug into the 3dr transmitter dongle. No need for the special USB-to-go cable for a laptop."

Rob Valentine replied to Andrei Taylor's discussion 3D Robotics Iris-M Pro in IRIS
"Pseudo. As in fake. As in not a real NDVI image, as there is no NIR channel on this GoPro. However, that doesn't mean it doesn't have value. Even with a "real" NDVI or EDVI or whatever your index of choice is, the real value comes when…"

"Another aspect of the agriculture angle is documentation for crop insurance claims, which I am learning is a very complicated thing. How I can be of service, and whether this documentation should take the form of hi-res maps or aerial stills and…"

"At the risk of sounding like a farmer, which I am certainly not, corn is ~$4/bushel right now, which is really low. So, let's just say there is a lot of... cooperative research going on. I'm new at this. It's very new to the farmers too. The…"

"Just for fun, here's a screen shot from the DroneDeploy web portal of a map I made on Sunday. This was made with a stock GoPro Hero4 Silver, resulting in a pseudo-NDVI image (red-blue instead of NIR-VIS). We are finding some potential for this type…"

Rob Valentine replied to Andrei Taylor's discussion 3D Robotics Iris-M Pro in IRIS
"The QX1 is really slick. Full APS-C sensor, some comms, a battery and not much else. Which in some ways makes it perfect for use on a UAV. That said, it doesn't have much use for me outside DroneDeploy at the moment. There is no equivalent to…"

"I would suggest you call them and talk to them, Jimmy. They are pretty well organized for the individual farmer or construction company that wants to do his own thing. They are still figuring out how to deal with the small or medium sized operators…"

Rob Valentine replied to Andrei Taylor's discussion 3D Robotics Iris-M Pro in IRIS
"Thanks, Jimmy. I wish I did have a printer, but I don't (although lately it occurs to me that I perhaps should).

I started out with the IMPConcepts Tension Gimbal Adapter and went from there. The QX1 has a funny little bayonet type mount on the…"

Rob Valentine replied to Andrei Taylor's discussion 3D Robotics Iris-M Pro in IRIS
"The maps are very good. The quality is really dependent on the camera choice and altitude flown. It is certainly on par with Pix4d, and does the same type of things (Orthomosaic, DSM, Vegetation Index (NDVI) and 3d models).
For me, the advantage of…"

"Here's the QX1 nadir mount to which I aspire. My current mount, while light and functional, isn't this slick."

Rob Valentine replied to Andrei Taylor's discussion 3D Robotics Iris-M Pro in IRIS
"Well, it depends how I'm configured, and what the "regular" mission is:
If you want to use the 3dr ground station, you've got to pop the shell and swap out the CoPilot for the 3dr module. If I'm flying a hard-mounted nadir facing camera, and want to…"

Rob Valentine replied to Andrei Taylor's discussion 3D Robotics Iris-M Pro in IRIS
"It's the DroneDeploy CoPilot module (there is also a bit that goes inside the shell and plugs into TELEM 1 on the pixhawk). It essentially replaces the 3dr ground station radio. The module uploads the flight plan to the autopilot (and appropriately…"
