About Me:

I'm a programmer and a student, I mostly do embedded linux or other embedded opensource programming. I'm a paraglider pilot.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I'm an active mapper in OpenStreetMap and recently am interested very much in making aerial imagery for mapping. Experimenting with using UAVs for this now.

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Kristaps Brass's blog post Comparing Precision of Autopilots for Survey Missions - DJI A2
"A little short on hard data.  I'd expect some overall error estimate like least square or surface area between actual and desired path, explanation of how the actual path was obtained to exclude GPS error, and a comparison of these results to the…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on FernRF's blog post New FPV option - FPV HAT for Raspberry Pi
"Thanks.  Interesting about the image degradation... I wonder how that works mathematically since a single bit error in the ciphertext is supposed to, on average, affect 50% of the decrypted plaintext, for a good cipher."

Andrew Zaborowski commented on FernRF's blog post New FPV option - FPV HAT for Raspberry Pi
"Also by the way will the image quality also degrade in a similar way with encryption enabled?  Or will transmission errors cause a total loss of the frame or blocks of the frame, as could be expected?"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on FernRF's blog post New FPV option - FPV HAT for Raspberry Pi
"Some total end-to-end latency figure (glass to glass I think the call it) incl. rapivid and your choice of a display device would be good to have when you get around to benchmarking it.  Thanks!  Look promissing."

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Bob Morley's blog post PixFalcon, Mega2560, Pi2 & S-Bus
"One thing that rings an alarm here is the potential delays (bluetooth, wifi, 3G all have their levels of latency, then USB is another source of latency and then just the number of nodes between the controller and the pixfalcon).  May not be an issue…"

Andrew Zaborowski replied to Philipp's discussion Foldable frame for camera-quadrocopter (for travels)
"I've considered the XuGong at one point, but I have since built a few quanum Trifecta foldable pocket tricopters initially for faster flying, not quite racing but possibly having similar amount of mobility, using a micro-APM.  I've now come to a…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on TenzinR's blog post Human Flying Drone
"BTW motors of similar size and bigger, e.g. Hengli HL 9235 100kv can be had from aliexpress for $100-$150, I wonder how they compare to these KDE Direct quality motors.
Also nice piloting in that video in the forest scenes and elsewhere."

Andrew Zaborowski commented on TenzinR's blog post Human Flying Drone
"@Rob: I don't know much about DJI stuff but this other guy with the manned 8x internal combustion engine copter actually uses DJI Nazas v2 for his builds and has one video where he's tuning the PIDs for the engines, so apparently that is possible. …"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on jlcortex's blog post 3hr 10min endurance test with HYBRiX quadrotor by Quaternium
"An amazing project!
However, I'm recently playing with a smaller long endurance build and I'd think that at 67" prop size you could achieve 3 hours and more with just standard electric batteries."

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Marc MERLIN's blog post Trying 3D FPV flying on a plane with wide angle 3D view (using skyzone 3D FPV goggles)
"Try an Oculus Rift, it has a much wider FoV making the feeling of being inside the aircraft much stronger.  But, with the resolution it has it can easily simulate FatSharks, HeadPlays, SkyZones, etc. by displayng the image scaled down to use 20-30%…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Víctor Mayoral's blog post Raspberry Pi Zero launched, towards < 60$ Linux autopilots?
"@Patrick: I was considering a $2 Arduino (as my solder-breadboard-based hat's daughterboard) as an expander for analog inputs.  Arduino is pretty much as proven a design as you'll get for interfacing with hardware, but honestly it makes sense to try…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Víctor Mayoral's blog post Raspberry Pi Zero launched, towards < 60$ Linux autopilots?
"Well, I've tried software PWM long ago on an OLinuXino nano (60 MHz I think?) non-RT kernel and I was getting poor accuracy but it kinda worked, the jitter was perhaps some 100uS.  On a 1GHz CPU like the RPi + RT-kernel you may be close (4uS…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Víctor Mayoral's blog post Raspberry Pi Zero launched, towards < 60$ Linux autopilots?
"@Laser Developer - that is perhaps a good novel idea, but a built-in IMU is just about $10 so you might want one onboard independent of any other peripherals. It all depends on the use-case, it seems ready to use packaged Flight Controllers in a…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on Víctor Mayoral's blog post Raspberry Pi Zero launched, towards < 60$ Linux autopilots?
"I think most would be totally happy with a hat that brings in an I2C MPU6050 + magnetometer + barometer, 5V protection for a few inputs for the receiver signal and a few outputs stepped up to 5V for the PWMs broken out in servo connector layout,…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on MHefny's blog post To Tricopter or to Quadcopter ..... That is the Question
"Gary,
I haven't used digital servos yet.  In my experience the servo's power draw is minimal.  The reason I mentioned micro quads is that you generally have smaller batteries on them, and there, and additional 100mAh might be an issue.  At anything…"

Andrew Zaborowski commented on MHefny's blog post To Tricopter or to Quadcopter ..... That is the Question
"Gary, I disagree about efficiency.
I think we can agree that, generally, a bigger prop and a bigger motor provides better effciency, so let's take that out of the equation.  Let's only compare a tri-copter setup and a quadcopter setup of equivalent…"
