Cory commented on yogesh's blog post IR sensor calibration
"I would suggest that you look at the paparazzi source code, I was able to tease out the equations that they use to estimate attitude from the IR sensor information. I don't remember which file you need to look at off the top of my head (estimator.h…"

"Paparazzi has a lot of features, and if you program well you can make it do anything you want. Be prepared to spend plenty of time in the tuning portion of the setup."

I am about to do another paparazzi systems integration on a Nexstar. Since the GPS is on the AP board, I have to mount the AP where it has a clear view of the sky. Previously I have cut the fuse aft of the wing, and mounted the AP there, but I have…

"You do not need AI for paparazzi. Installing and using paparazzi is mainly a systems integration problem."

"I never used the ground station software for Microgear. Curt did not release the code for it, and I never got the gumstix to work correctly. I was still struggling with the gumstix, when my project was changed to three UAVs. I could not get any more…"

"Ronan,

using the gumstix with Paparazzi is beyond my experience. I do know that if you want to use the classix board, then you will have to make it yourself, but then you have a builtin gumstix interface. I do notice that the procs on the classix…"

"I got
a question about altitude hold. Paparazzi does that pretty well. Here is a pic of the flight track of my first successful auto flight. The side view shows the altitude hold pretty well. Be aware that the plane needs a lot of tuning. I should…"

"I wrote a post about the plane way back when for those who want more info.

I think my next project will be using an epp based plane. I am thinking of giving the Easy Glider Pro a try."

I think for the hobbyist, the only real choice is an open source autopilot. Unfortunately with a closed source solution, you are stuck with the feature set that the developer wants you to have. Another major advantage of open source autopilots is…

Cory commented on Cory's blog post List of suggested skills for someone who wants to DIY a DRONE
"I have not had any trouble with the props, but at $2-3 each it is not a big deal if one gets broken. Also, the plane flies so much nicer without all of the drag from the gear. And I can land in fairly tall grass."
